Guest guest
, That's strange... I thought I saw this post come through, but then it didn't get delivered. Thanks for re-sending it. <<I know he can tolerate banana, tomatoe quite well but my DAN doctor said they are high in phenol and should be used very rarely.>> Does he have a severe problem with phenols? What do you see happening when he eats them? I'm a little concerned when parents are trying to follow so many other rules beyond SCD... I mean I'm not trying to discount what the DAN doctor says, but sometimes there are so many hoops to jump through with that protocol that it makes it very difficult to implement SCD at the same time. SCD all by itself is a huge project to tackle... then if you're trying to avoid a whole list of foods because of other concerns, it really limits you. I would say... absolutely avoid those foods that cause YOUR SON an obvious problem, but if he doesn't really have overt symptoms from them, and you're just avoiding those foods according to general DAN protocol advice, I would consider not worrying about that FOR RIGHT NOW... or maybe consider adding Houston's No Fenol enzyme. I just hate to see his choices of foods so limited at this point. <<I will reintroduce zuccini from today and really hope he can tolerate it.>> What did you see before that suggests he can't tolerate zucchini? Behavioral stuff? Red face/ears? If you're talking about the loose BMs, I don't think you can necessarily pin that on the zucchini. There were too many other possibilities. <<1. Are apple and banana better tolerated than bears? How many bananas can I give him a day?>> I'm assuming you meant pears, not " bears " ? Many parents report that their kids do BETTER on pears than apples.... so they do pear sauce or baked pears quite a bit. Bananas... I guess I would consider more than two a day to be pushing the limit for a young child, but it depends. That's just my thing. Once in a great while, my daughter will have as many as three in a day... but she's 9 yrs old and 69 lbs. Usually, it's one or two for her. <<2. We have stopped Nystatin from yesterday. Can we give him the legal probiotic (we have Kirkman " SCD legal " acidophilus ) from today? >> YES... definitely! Start with a small amount... open the capsule and just sprinkle a little bit into some food (not something hot). See how he does on about a quarter of the suggested dose.... then move it up if he's fine after a day or two. Keep in mind that you may be seeing die-off mixed in, so it might be difficult to know whether there's negative response to the acidophilus or die-off symptoms. If you see anything REALLY OBVIOUS from this, then let's pull it back out and wait a week. Was he tolerating this probiotic before? Or had you not ever given him any of it? <<We bought the product a long time ago, but my DAN! doc mentioned D-lactic acid problem caused by the probiotic. >> Here again, you're running up against some of the " rules of DAN " .... and I understand the logic they're going with- I'm not saying you should ignore their advice... but unless YOUR child has an established, chronic issue with high d-lactic, IN MY OPINION, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages AT THIS POINT. It is just SO important that you repopulate the gut with beneficial bacteria in these beginning stages of SCD, or you'll have more potential for yeast overgrowth, for one thing. You see, under " normal " circumstances, a person would be starting to eat the SCD yogurt right now..... so if you're NOT doing dairy right now, you simply MUST use the supp. As the bad guys die-off and take their leave, we want some good guys to take up that space. The SCD goat yogurt would be far superior... and I hope you could try it at some point down the road. I'm a little sad when the DAN docs are the ones prescribing SCD to the families... but then they have so many other things they want you to be doing at the same time, they almost make SCD success impossible. For one thing, juggling all these different things will make you crazy as a parent! There is nothing wrong with doing some of the DAN things, but I think it makes sense to get the diet well-established... THEN add the other things. For one thing, after some gut healing has taken place on SCD, many kids no longer have issues with phenols or salicylates, etc. It's often the leaky gut itself that is at the bottom of these problems.... so if we can focus on the diet until it's really on the right track, then true gut healing has a chance. Beyond that, do what additional things seem logical for that individual child according to how they're actually presenting, I just think the whole thing is more do-able and sensible. Sometimes I think the docs just don't have any real idea of what it's like to be a parent who's been on " overwhelm mode " for many months... or even years. This is tough stuff to go through. I wish the doctors all had direct, first-hand experience with implementing this diet with their own child... or with themselves... so they'd have a thorough understanding of what it takes. (okay... done ranting!) <<We have stopped all other supplements as well. They were all introduced before SCD. The homeopathic was for his persistent coughs.>> Is the homeopathic in a liquid drop form? Or the tablets? If it's the liquid drops, you could go ahead and keep doing that, I think, if you think it was helping. One foot in front of the other.... Guest guest
Hi Patti, Sorry for returning your message so late. We have taken your advice and introduced over-ripe bananas, zuccini, green beans and spinach so far. He seems to be all right with that. We didn't have any unusal reactions yet. His BMs also started to improve now. He only had one BM in the last 3 days. It was soft formed and dark color, although I would like to see once a day. Our doctor has confirmed that he has clostidia overgrowth based on his medical history. We will start using SBoulardii soon. Thanks again for the advice. Best wishes, Re: SCD - bad BM - Patti , That's strange... I thought I saw this post come through, but then it didn't get delivered.
