Anaesthesia for EUS

Hi Chrissy,

Yes, I will phone them as soon as I've read the details. They should

arrive in the post tomorrow. They will explain what level of

sedation they will give. Sue had her EUS at the same hospital and

remebers nothing after the IV sedation. (I don't think she'll mind

me mentioning this.) I hope the same for me. I doubt if they'll

offer a general anaesthetic as such, but I'm not very clear on the

distinction. I'll probably show the letter to my retired

anaesthetist neighbour and ask advice. I've always been fine with

the sedation before for all sorts of gastroscopies and even the ERCP

in 1988. I was aware of nothing! I have only had one gastroscopy,

among lots, where I seemed to come out of the sedation too soon or

go into it too late and was dimly but uncomfortably aware of gagging

at some point. Generally I enjoy a nice sleep afterwards in the

recovery room before being taken home! I hope that happens with the

EUS. I'll let you know what my letter says; they always give all the

details of what to expect.

I once arrived for a gastroscopy to find they were intending to do

it without sedation!!!! I politely declined and had to come back a

couple of weeks later when they had the appropriate personnel to

sedate me! My neighbour told me never to accept the procedure

without sedation. Clearly it saves them money (no skilled personnel

needed to sedate and no bed/nurse in recovery room afterwards).

Sedation for the EUS will be automatic, of course. With less lengthy

or complicated procedures it is sometimes a matter of choice. I have

a colleague who hates sedation and has had gastroscopies without it

BY CHOICE!! UGH!!! Swallowing that tube-through-the-nose! NO

THANK YOU!!

Take care Chrissy. What is your next step now? I'm SO GLAD it

worked out about your ex-supervisor. So you'll be taken back when

you want, right?! Good!

What happens now?

Keep in touch. Thinking about you. I'll tell you about the test.

Maybe they'll just use a large mallet to knock me out! I could do

with one now...I've had a very bad day pain-wise and I'm in

that " must-do-all-the ironing-and-packing-for-the-hols " stage.

The " But-we're-only-going-for-a-week-dear.....-yes-but-I-don't-know-

what-the-weather-will-be-like-or-exactly-what-we'll-be-doing-do-I?? "

stage!!!

Better go now and get some more packing done!

With my love,

Fliss
