Hi there everyone

Apologies if this is a really stupid question (I kind of get the feeling it

is, but I'm still not sure of the answer, so I'll take the humiliation!) but is

the goats milk yoghurt considered dairy free? I have a two year old epileptic

autistic on the diet, and I've been doing dairy free scd but would like to try

the yoghurt if its permissable.

Thanks!

Anita

Jack, 2.2, dairy free scd properly for seven days (cheated for the first month

and just did an exclusion version of the diet, now being good and doing it

properly with intro diet and slow introduction of cooked foods!)

Goat's Milk Yogurt is " dairy " but much of the lactose is gone and the casein has

been

denatured. It would also depend on how long your boy has been SCD because yogurt

isn't

started until three weeks to a month after. You start with only an eighth of a

teaspoon and

see what the reaction is.

The yogurt has been found to have great benefit with autistic children.

Read more about it here:

http://www.pecanbread.com/goatyogurt.html

Many parents here, especially those coming from a casein diet expressed concern

and

were very surprised at how ell their children have done with the yogurt and that

they have

been able to tolerate it.

if it is not agrreable, SCD can be followed without it and their are options for

home made

nut milks.

OK. I'm a little confused. Recently, I posted something saying that I was

under the impression that yogurt was not to be started until a good month or

so into scd. The responses were that yogurt is permissible right away, and

that there is even a cheesecake recipe for the intro diet using yogurt. So,

is this delay in yogurt primarily for the people on the autistic spectrum?

Can someone clarify this whole thing about when to introduce yogurt?

Meleah,

For those children who have been on CF diets, we really would like to see them

eating the SCD goat yogurt.... but parents were so worried about introducing any

dairy, that a time period of about 3 months was settled on. This would give them

time to get a little healing in and then cautiously start (if the parent's WANT

to and the child isn't anaphylactic to goat dairy).

Anyone who feels their child would probably do okay on the goat dairy is

certainly free to begin earlier. The probiotics in it are so important... and

the yogurt itself seems to have some healing qualities that go beyond just a

probiotic delivery method.

We just don't want to be telling parents that SCD goat yogurt is okay for ALL

autistic children, from day one, despite past problems they may have had with

dairy.... for one thing, many parents would not trust that advice and might not

even try SCD at all if there wasn't some caution and flexibility with when, how

and whether to use the yogurt.

It's really going to depend on the individual child, too.

I hope that helps...

Patti

Meleah.... It's Patti again. I just wanted to clarify further.

You know, I have always told people " three months " -ish... for starting goat

yogurt, if they were CF. However, after I sent my last post, I do notice that

the pecanbread.com section on introducing dairy says " a few weeks " and closer

reading of Carol's post showed me that she said " three weeks to a month " . I

didn't want to add to the confusion... I don't think it's ever been considered

a hard and fast rule, one way or the other. Maybe it would be good for some of

us to have a little behind the scenes yogurt meeting... and see if we can settle

on the best timing. Maybe I have been wrong all this time!

hi

i dont mean to add fuel to to the fire and i apologise if it sounds

like i am, id just like to add our personal experience with the goat

yogurt]

this is our 2nd attempt on scd, weve been on it now for about 9

weeks and the boys are doing incredibley well, far better that they

were the first time we tried it.

the first time we held back on the yogurt alltogether for about 2 to

3 months, we then began using nut yogurt and i have to say for us we

had no significant improvements with the bowel issues, progress was

very slow and was very frustrating. this time round we introduced

the goat yogurt in 1/8tsp doses straight after the intro, we are now

further into the diet in 9 weeks than we had been in 6 months on our

previous attempt, needless to say i have far happier children as

they feel they are making progress too, (we keep the food chart on

the kitchen wall and tick off each food we tolerate earning a gift

at every stage we complete - we are now moving into stage 3),

i dont mean to cause any confusion but that is how it worked out for

us, we too were cf/gf/yf/sf/soyaf/phenol free before this diet and

in the interim period, but the goat yogurt has been hugely

successful, lots of die off - ie an increase in behaviours directly

correlating to an hour to 2 hours after ingestion, quite often i

dose at night so the bowel is repopulated overnight which again has

been very beneficial, this has culminated in lvely healthy bms as

soon as they get up and 2-3 bms a day, all perfectly formed.

the casein is different in the goat yogurt, and the proteins are

denatured through the fermentation process, plus most or all the

lactose is used up by the flora anyhow, so there logically would be

little 'side effects', other than die off,

i hope this helps in some small way, but please remember that this

is how it worked out for us, im not guaranteeing it to be the way it

would work out for someone else,

kindest regards
