Guest guest
1) I heard this diet is hard on the kidneys? 2) Should we do this diet dairy free first and if so how do we make any of the cheeses and yogurts? Does coconut milk work? We were gfcf for awhile and then had re-introduced these foods. We don't drink cows milk at home but in the last few months did introduce yogurt and cheese to the diet (I did not see an effect but he is nonverbal and can't tell me if it hurts) 3) My son does NOT have diarhea or vomiting so how do we know when to stop the diet or do we ever stop or if it is working? 4) Do we continue on with enzymes such as zyme prime etc? 5) Are there too many eggs in this diet? I mean every recipe calls for it, what can we use as a substitute? Since xantham gum is illegal? My son had shown a high reactivity to eggs 4 years back on the Great Plains allergy test. They said it could have been due to the fact that he used to eat so many eggs. I don't see any reaction with eggs myself with him. 6) Since my son does not have diarhea, can we start right away on raw veggies/fruits? He does get constipation though. Thanks, Tumpa Reinhardt To the world you may be one person, to one person you are the world~Anonymous
Guest guest
Thanks , i will go and read through the archives! Re: Sorry more questions...please help! Tumpa, You wrote: <<1) I heard this diet is hard on the kidneys?>> Where did you " hear " this? SCD is not inherantly " hard on the kidneys " , if you are eating a balance and good variety of all the allowed foods. In cases where some people are eliminating many of the fruits and vegetables, and eating primarily eggs/meat/fish, I can understand how the kidneys could be taxed. If you read something on another autism website that stated SCD is " hard on the kidneys " , it is outdated and untrue.... has been disproved within the community of DAN doctors, for example. <<2) Should we do this diet dairy free first>> <<in the last few months did introduce yogurt and cheese to the diet (I did not see an effect but he is nonverbal and can't tell me if it hurts)>> We usually tell parents that if their child does not tolerate dairy, or if they have been dairy free prior to starting SCD, they can certainly do a dairy-free SCD if they need to. If you have been giving your child dairy products recently, without any obvious fall-out, it would be advantageous to do SCD with the 24-hr SCD yogurt made from GOAT milk. This is a MUCH preferred food to any of the nut milk yogurts, which can only serve as a delivery medium for probiotics, really. PLEASE go to the website, www.pecanbread.com and read through all the links... especially regarding the yogurt. There are recipes for nut yogurts in the recipes section, if you prefer to try it that way. <<3) My son does NOT have diarhea or vomiting so how do we know when to stop the diet or do we ever stop or if it is working?>> Your son's symptoms will determine whether the diet is " working " or not... if he doesn't have diarrhea, you are going to go by what you see with behavior, mood, attention, speech, etc.... as well as general health and bowel function. Some parents see such good things that they are happy to continue SCD indefinitely. It's certainly too soon (since you haven't even started SCD yet) to start looking for an end date. Take one step at a time and just observe your child. <<4) Do we continue on with enzymes such as zyme prime etc?>> Houston's Zyme Prime is legal. You may continue enzymes if you feel they are helping. <<5) Are there too many eggs in this diet? I mean every recipe calls for it, what can we use as a substitute? >> There are egg-free recipes on the website. You don't have to use eggs if your child reacts to them. We usually advise parents to hold off on any food that their child has an obvious reaction to. Going by food sensitivity test results is up to you. There are egg substitutes listed on the website. <<6) Since my son does not have diarhea, can we start right away on raw veggies/fruits? He does get constipation though.>> No. Everyone starts with peeled and cooked. Constipation is just another manifestation of a gut that is not functioning properly. You need to make EVERYTHING easy to digest in the beginning weeks/months. Jumping too soon into raw foods has tripped up many an anxious SCD family... who then find themselves going back to the beginning and starting all over. Many of the questions you're asking have been addressed before on our list.... There is a wealth of information in the archived messages on the Yahoo group homepage for the list, and on the www.pecanbread.com website. Reading that website thoroughly should give you many of the answers. Patti
