I'm not aware of any store bought bacon without nitrates and preservatives.

Your best bet is to check

www.eatwild.com

You can look for farms by state. We have a farm about 30 minutes from us

that raises pork, and it has absolutely nothing added to it when processed.

The bacon tastes pretty much like pork chops...it's just cut really thin.

If you are looking for JUST nitrate and preservative free...

http://tinyurl.com/y67twl

This is Niman Ranch. I have seen this product in Trader Joe's and

Whole Foods. The 365 brand of Whole foods bacon also has a

preservative-free variety (but with cane sugar). I believe Applegate

might as well - not sure (never tried it).

We were lucky enough to have a friend who made their own bacon,

but I have used both of the above products with my son VERY

occasionally and he's been fine.

There was a discussion here some days ago that discussed

the " allowed but maybe not a hot idea " for spectrum kids to risk the

sugar issue. fwiw.

We use Gualtney brand bacon - it is avail at Wal-Mart but is commercial bacon

with the preservatives and whatnot. No sugar though.. but my kids tolerate it

very well. Just wanted to share our experience as I haven't been able to find

any health food store varieties without sugar.

I have a follow-up question from a previous thread regarding the bacon with

no sugar added. I was able to find some at Kroger (thanks to a suggestion of

a fellow list member), but the ingredients indicate that this bacon has

nitrates in it. The bacon recipe in the Healing Little Tummies book

indicates that you need bacon free of sugar, nitrates, and preservatives.

I'm imaging this is the way to go? How on earth do you find this?

Thanks,

Audrey
