Guest guest
Dear Fred, I always thought the bad dreams were just me. Took me a while to figure out that it was the narcotics. Thanks for your response. When I've had to take that in pill form I have tremendous, frightening and surrealistic nightmares. Totally gruesome and worse than anything I would ever imagine on my own. It's as though they were scripted by a total stranger. For that reason, I refuse to take it anymore. Strangely enough, it was given to me via a pain pump in the hospital for 5 days, and I didn't have the first dream or nightmare the whole time I was on the pump. Guest guest
, Hydrocodone, which is in vicodin, lortab, and other pain meds that I can't think of the brand names right now - anyway, it often makes me wired or have bad nightmares when I can sleep. It doesn't do it all the time and it doesn't seem to be related to how many I've had on a particular day. Also, it sometimes makes me itch and I have even had mild rashes from it now and then. I rarely take hydrocodone now because the doctors don't want me taking much tylenol because I have autoimmune liver disease. Hydrocodone is not available by itself - it normally comes with tylenol, but it's also available with either aspirin or ibuprofen, I think. I can't take aspirin or ibuprofen because I am on coumadin. So, they switched my pain med to MS Contin 30 mg three times a day and Oxy IR (immediate release) 5 mg four times a day as needed for break through pain. The MS Contin (which is long acting morphine) and the Oxy IR (immediate release oxycodone) don't seem to wire me or make me itch as often as the hydrocodone. However, I think the Oxy IR wires me every now and then. I've never had any bad nightmares when taking the MS Contin and Oxy IR. When I'm in the hospital, they normally give me Demerol IV and I haven't had problems with nightmares, feeling wired, or itching from the demerol. I think I mentioned in a previous post that I have atarax that I can take for itching. Atarax is prescription strength and similar to benadryl, only stronger. Liver disease very often makes you itch for no apparent reason and benadryl was just not strong enough to help much with the liver itchies. I was having to take atarax several times a day until my doctor put me on clarinex 5 mg. I take it every night and I now often go for days or even weeks without needing to take the atarax. Atarax is also sometimes used to help you sleep. You might ask your doctor for a prescription and take atarax along with the vicodin any time you have to take the vicodin at night. take care, W alabama
Guest guest
Dear , Thanks for the helpful tips. I will keep them in mind when and if I need to go back on the vicodin. Hope you are having a decent day. Love, W
Guest guest
, I get really bad nightmares only when I take vicodin. It's one of the reasons I asked my doctors to switch me to oxycodone. The other reason was that the meds was also affecting my blood clotting time and since I'm on blood thinners, I can't afford to take medications that affect my blood clotting abilities. So, you aren't the only one who gets nightmares, though mine seems to be specific to vicodin. Kimber -- Kimber Vallejo, CA hominid2@...
