Guest guest
Deanna - I have been on sandostatin LAR for one year now. YES, I believe it is helping. I can't say for sure how much, but I have been healthier in the past year then I have been in the five years prior. I even have accumulated 3 weeks vacation and 2 weeks sick leave!!! Always before, I OWED the employer days (or they took pay from me when I ran over my days). I must say there are other possible factors. I do have Dr. Lehman at IU Med Ctr do sphrincteronomies and stents when needed (my last one was in Dec 2002. I go back in two weeks for another one as my duct is closed down again, hence the attack in Oct and Feb). I feel those procedures also help. I do watch my diet, I exercise, take multiple vitamins, have acupuncture every couple of weeks. I hope this info helps. Guest guest
Good morning - Sandostatin LAR is given by injection. It is an " off-label " usage. One of the side effects of this drug is it dries up the pancreatic juices, therefore, eleviating extra " stress " on the pancreas. I have a defective duct which is very small, so the less I have to deal with an overabundance of panc enzymes, the better I am - when the ducts close, I get an attack, so with minimal amounts of pancreatic juices flowing, it helps - sorry this is in layman's terms and the easiest I can understand how this drug works. There are also daily shots, which I started out on to see how I would do. I took those for three months and did good, so I was switched to the LAR (long-acting, slow release). It is a shot in the hip. I have it done at the dr.'s office as then the medication can be covered under major medical (it costs $2700 per shot) instead of under prescription costs (shich would prbably max out WAY too soon). It also comes in two parts and has to be mixed in a very special way or it " sets up " too fast and can not be injected! It sort of is like white Elmer's glue! I have experienced NO side effects. I hope this explanation helps. Cecilia Mesa, AZ
