Walt,

Your morning readings and fasting BG levels are just great, but I can see that

you've really got some problems with your post prandial readings. What kind

of system do they have you doing with your Novalog at meals? It is possible

to attain a post prandial BG level of 140 or less if you're taking the right

amounts of fast acting insulin with your meals. As I'm sure you know, 140 is

the highest level that your BG should be if you want to avoid diabetic

complications later on. If you are dosing correctly in a regimen that matchs

your insulin to your carbohydrate intake, it's very easy to have a BG of 140 or

less. That's why I'm curious as to what your diabetes nurse has instructed you

to do. And when your BG is 220 to 175, what do you do then? Have they

instructed you that you can take more insulin to help bring your levels down?

I'm asking all these questions because I've learned ways to get proper control

of my BG's, enough so to get a 5.5% and a 5.6% on my last two HBA1c blood

tests. Those scores put me into a non-diabetic catagory, which is pretty darn

good for a person with brittle, type 1 diabetes!! The methods I've learned to

get this kind of control were NOT taught to me by my Certified Diabetic Nurse

Educator, alas, but by someone else who is diabetic and an expert in insulin

instruction and management. I know that if I can do it, others can, too, and

most of the diabetics who have worked with this man are doing as well as I

am.

If there's anything I can do to help you, please let me know. It's important

that

you get a handle on those after-meal levels as soon as you can.

With love, hope and prayers,

Basicly, I'm at 1 unit for every 25 carbs. and 1 unit for every 25

over 125 for glucose. I also have adjusted my carb intake a little.

The only issue is the low's I get sometimes if I go I bit higher on

the insulin before my next meal. Still working on the adjustments and

letting my body get used to the change.
