Guest guest
Jeyanthi, These are the typical side effects from the initial die off reaction to the SCD diet. I also was scared when my son went through die off and wanted him to quit the diet but I am glad that he insisted to continue with SCD. Please give him Epsom Salt baths and activated charcoal. You may read the section of our website about initial bad reactions. It is in the " Overcoming Difficulties " section of www.pecanbread.com Mimi > Hi, > My 2yr old son is in the first week of his intro diet. Guest guest
Update of my son after the first week of diet. I've not yet seen any improvements. But following are the regressions I've noticed: 1. Lost eye contact (which he had gained after GFCF diet) 2. Constipating or having very hard stool with part of it is in black color (is black stool ok?) 3. Lost focus/attention 4. Less compliance - could be due to focus/attention issue? 5. Moody/serious and Spacy - could be die-off reaction. Should I just take all the above as die-off symptoms and wait until it goes away by itself or is there anything about the food he is eating. I gave him epsom-salt bath. He was more irritated after that. Should I still continue with epsom-salt bath by lowering the amount? Each and everything he is eating now are introduced for the first time after 5 months. I could not introduce new food item one by one because all he was eating before are illegal for SCD. He eats Egg, Chicken, Turkey, Shrimp, Carrot, Squash, Zuccini, Apple and banana. Except banana everything is boiled and pureed. I'm trying to rotate these as much as possible but he eats egg daily. Could his regressions be because of the new food(allergy) he is eating or all of them sounds like die-off? Thanks for helping me during this tough phase. Guest guest
Jeyanthi, Sounds like die-off to me. One week on SCD is not enough yet to gauge how this diet will do for your son. It can take a while before you will see improvement. I know that its hard. We so badly want to see improvement immediately but SCD is an uphill climb with so many benefits but time is our friend in this. The epsom salt bath probably irritated him as you got rid of the toxins. You could try it again with less salt. Think of it like when you give you child a cooler bath when they have a really high fever. You know that they hate it but they need to be in there. Its torturous. Hope you will find your way through. Guest guest
I agree with Charlene that this ALL sounds like die-off symptoms. However, he may also feel unwell due to constipation. You need to do something to alleviate this. There is a constipation protocol on Elaine's website: www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info ... in the " Knowledge Base " under " C " . Please try that. You might also add a magnesium supplement.... magnesium oxide or citrate forms usually have a laxative effect. Apple and banana are both considered somewhat " binding " ..... meaning they will act to firm up the stool. You might consider using pears instead of apples. Cooked pears are generally well-tolerated in the beginning.... and they're in season now. (*Well... they are where I live... not sure where you are located.) I believe that everything you are seeing right now are not true " regressions " ... but are just temporary symptoms. Remember, the toxins that were being given off every day from the bad gut pathogens were affecting him somewhat all along.... but NOW, as they are dying off, they are giving off a tremendous amount of those SAME toxins. He's getting a big dose of them all at once and his little body has to process that toxin. It's hard work for little ones. One week into SCD is far too soon to expect improvement.... it's MUCH more common to see things get worse at this point. Don't worry.... you'll get there. It will lead to better things. Guest guest
Thanks a lot Patti, Charlene and Robin for your replies. I would not have continued with out that! Today is the end of 2nd week of SCD for my son! And he's already come back to his orginal active/cheerful nature. Even though he still is constipating sometimes, he has formed stools. But today I noticed there were black strings(looked like hair pieces) like thing all over the stool. I remember someone mentioned about this few days before. I definitely think it is the die-off clearing! My son also craves eggs. I don't know if the eggs are doing anything for his constipation and bloating. Does anyone has any idea? Guest guest
This is wonderful to hear! Yes, I think you're right.... this sounds like dead gut pathogens being expelled from his body. He may be craving the sulphur from the eggs.... I know it is really important for detoxing. Same reason we give the epsom salts baths (magnesium SULPHATE). I am not highly knowledgeable about the technical details of this.... but just guessing that HE knows what his body needs. How many eggs per day is he eating? I would not be concerned with him eating a lot of eggs for a while.... you will gradually be able to get him to eat more variety and a better balance. Eggs are generally easy to digest. If you're seeing GOOD things, then keep doing what you're doing. If he's still constipated, consider using Elaine's constipation protocol (if you haven't already).... which is on www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info ... in the " Knowledge Base " under " C " . Guest guest
Patti, Currently I'm not allowing him to eat more than 4 eggs a day, 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. But he keep on asking me for more after eating 2 eggs at a time. How many we can feed a 2yr old? I just got the Magnesium Citrate supplement I'd ordered, would be starting to give him that. Hopefully, that will help him with the constipation issues. I do see him vocalising more now even though not meaningful. But has more sensory issues now especially when he is constipated. So if I fix his constipation issue most probably some of the sensory issues will go away. Thanks a lot for your support! Guest guest
I do not think that's too many eggs for right now. I'm sure you will want him to begin eating a wider variety of foods, and maybe fewer eggs...... but for right now, this is legal and okay. Many kids are very, VERY hungry in the beginning.... because those bad gut guys are still CRAVING what they need to survive. Things will settle down with time. Yes, I think you'll have a happier, calmer kids once the constipation is alleviated. Have you tried Elaine's constipation protocol?
