facial assymmetry when looking in a mirror

Does this improve?? Both of my twins have plagiocephaly and facial distortion when looking in a mirror. I did not think that my daughters' plagio needed a helmet, but if it will improve her facial assymetry, I am all for it. What have you found, as far as assymmetry and treatment with a helmet???

Thanks,

The helmet can help with facial assymetry but it is not always a guarantee.

Facial asym is the hardest and last thing to correct usually. The face is an

extension of the skull, so it is harder to change, but if the skull base (ears)

can shift enough, it should make a difference in the facial assymetry.

One thing to keep in mind is that a mirror is a 2D reflection of a 3D object, so

it can actually look more distorted than it really is because when you look at

them in the mirror, you are seeing them opposite of what you see when you look

at them face to face. So it may look odd to you even without facial asym in the

mix. For instance, if someone has a distinctive mole near the right corner of

thier mouth, or their nose is crooked to the right (when you look at them face

to face), when you see them in a mirror and the mole is now on the left side and

their nose shifts to the left, it's going to look a little different than your

used to. Conversely, reflections in a mirror are the only way they will see

themselves for the rest of their life, so that was my concern. But I'm not sure

if my son's facial asymmetry will stand out to him when he looks in the mirror

as he grows up, because he really won't know it any other way. You know what I

mean?

My son wore two bands and his facial asym improved a good deal so that it is now

not noticeable face to face or really even in photos (which is also a 2D image),

but I can still see it in the mirror (though again, it is a lot better).

Hope that helps some.
