Guest guest
Hi, Were the Starband and CT measurements and assessments consistent? We are thinking of getting an evaluation done by CT in a couple months as we near the end of our Starband treatment. We are happy with the Starband, but 's growth is slow due to his age. Thanks, Kathy, mom to , 15 months, 3 months Starband for plagio babymonkeyny wrote: Hi Everyone, Luke had a STARband from 4/8/09-6/10/09. He had severe brachy and mild plagio (97.5%, 6mm). If we didn't, it could cause problems with our relationship in the future with "you told me not to do it again," "we should have done it when we could have," etc. So, we are getting another band tomorrow, this time a DOCband from CT in Paramus, NJ. I am not looking forward to the whole experience, especially since Luke is almost 10 months now and was 5 months when we initially banded him. Which means, he will probably be in it for the whole 4 months. However, as one of my good friends said (and please forgive the cheesiness, but it helped me) it will a couple of months of misery for my husband and I and a lifetime of happiness for Luke. I really appreciate the support this group provides. I am actually thinking of becoming an ortho because of it. Guest guest
, The fact that you and your husband have decided to reband Luke is a sign that there is still room for improvement. Also, the fact that CT is accepting to do so means that they believe his head shape will improve while wearing a DOC band. Good for you as now is the time to do it. Even though he is already 10 months old, anything can happen. Remember that Maysa got her first DOC band she was 9.5 months and we saw great, great results... Good luck with it all, I really think you will all start feeling better once he gets his new DOC band. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, When Luke graduated, his STARband measurements were 88% with the STARscanner. CT measured him at 91% with hand measurements. I really don't know what to believe, so I am relying on the visuals. What I do have to say is that your ortho is so IMPORTANT! I think Luke would have had more improvement or we would have kept him in his band till he outgrew it (he had 3 weeks left) if we didn't have such fit problems with it. His ortho just couldn't get the adjustments right. Almost 3 months later, he still has a crease on his forehead from one adjustment. The DOCband is truly custom fitted to Luke's head. We had issues with rotation with the STARband and there is none right now with the DOCband. There was also no pressure points with the STARband, which I believe is because the STARband gives lots of room to grow, but I think it was too big from the start and the ortho didn't know how to compensate for that. It sounds like you are having a good experience with your band. But if you have any doubts, I would go to CT and see what they have to say. The consultation is free and if is used to having a band on his head, he'll probably transition into a DOCband easily if you decide to go that route. Guest guest
Hi, Thanks. We are planning on getting a consultation from CT in a couple months as we near the end of the Starband treatment. Was CT's asymmetry measurement different too? I'm nervous that CT will give us higher numbers, and then I'll feel depressed since will be too old to get the numbers down much. I'm trying to get a sense of how the numbers differ, so that I can mentally prepare myself. The reason we are considering a DOCband is that we want to continue treatment as long as possible, and CT treats past 18 months. Guest guest
From what I've read, there appears to be huge differences between CT and STARscanner measurements. Theoretically speaking, the STARscanner should be more accurate if the person doing the scan does it correctly. It's hard to know whether Luke's case is an example of that or whether he regressed slightly after getting the band off. In any case, is probably right to rely on the visual. When the head looks right is the time to stop. Re: Re-banding with DOCband Hi,Thanks. Guest guest
Thanks, . At least if CT gives me higher numbers, I can mentally rely more upon what I visually see and the STARscanner results. On the bright side, if CT comes up with higher numbers, the insurance is more likely to help cover a second band. (Although we are still waiting for payment of the first band.) Could it be that CT provides rounded up measurements so that insurances are more likely to pay?  Also, with higher measurements, people are more likely to band. I sometimes wonder whether our first ortho came up with the high hand measurements (15mm) to encourage us to band since she thought needed one. (We switched orthos, since for our initial appointment we took the more available one and then we switched to the more experienced one.) 's asymmetry continues to visually improve very slowly. Now that his head is not quite so lopsided, I see a tiny bit of brachy. I'm sure it was always there, just compared to the plagio it was so minor. I'm glad to hear the new chiropractor experience has been more positive. Kathy, mom to , 15 months, Starband 3 months wrote:  From what I've read, there appears to be huge differences between CT and STARscanner measurements. Guest guest
From what I've read with other people posting differences, CT tends to come up with higher numbers for the asymmetry and lower numbers for the Cranial Index. Luke's example is the only one where I've seen the opposite. Part of the reason may be that the CI is supposed to be calculated using the widest part of the head and a computer can easily calculate this. I would think that it would be a little harder to find this if you are doing measurements by hand. Given that insurance companies seem to band more readily for plagio than brachy, this may work to your favor. Re: Re-banding with DOCband Hi,Thanks. Guest guest
Hi, Our ortho calculates the asymmetry by taking the difference of the diagonals at 30 degrees on level 3. Maybe, CT is not always taking the diagonals at this point, but instead at points of higher asymmetry.  I think this is what 's original ortho did with the hand measurements since she thought it captured 's true asymmetry better. If we can continue the Starband helmet an extra month and convince CT to band at 19 months, we will be banding again early Jan. Perhaps, we would then get more coverage since I believe we have a yearly $5,000 limit on helmets. (Also, we would end up with another month in a helmet.) Supposedly, our insurance covers helmets for 6mm asymmetry or greater. Actually, with the STARband scanner we are already barely under 6mm at level 3, but over 6mm at level 5. Sounds like CT measurements could easily be higher though. Thanks, Kathy mom to , 15 months, Starband 3 months for plagio wrote:  From what I've read with other people posting differences, CT tends to come up with higher numbers for the asymmetry and lower numbers for the Cranial Index. Guest guest
Hi , There was one scan the ortho provided it without asking. Last time we asked since we didn't see as much improvement up high as down low. Up high is 's worst area. It actually started looking a little better up high just this week. For the insurance, my husband told me it is $5,000 per any 12 months. So, waiting until Jan to band again doesn't help with the insurance. If we are extremely luck and manages a big growth spurt, we might not care about another band. We aren't counting on it though. We were never provided with those.        Re: Re-banding with DOCband  Hi, Thanks. Thanks again, Kathy, mom to 15 months, Starband 3 months   babymonkeyny wrote:  Hi Kathy, When Luke graduated, his STARband measurements were 88% with the STARscanner.
