Guest guest
, I've been offline for a couple days and don't know what other responses you've received to this question, but I would like to throw my two cents in. I've tried several different pancreatic enzymes in the last three years, Lipram, Ultrase, Creon and now Viokase, and have found them ALL helpful. Some are better at relieving the after meal pain than others, yet all of them have been effective in helping with better absorption and digestion, and with the correct amount of lipase, all have kept me from having problems with steatorrhea. I've found research that says that there should be a minimum of 30,000 units of lipase to be effective, so it's necessary to take enough of the enzymes to equal that amount. Now that I've been using them for several months, I've found that Viokase have done a better job of minimizing the pain than Lipram did. I took the Lipram and Ultrase for two and a half years (those are the enteric coated enzymes), before my GI switched me to Viokase. He felt these would help more with the pain afterward, and they do. The difference with the Viokase, over the enteric coated enzymes, is that you have to take an antiacid beforehand. In my case I'm taking a proton pump inhibitor called Protenix, twice a day, and this works very well. I rarely have any after-meal discomfort anymore. I hope this information has been helpful.
