Hi group - My son gets his DOCband today in a few hours. What am I in for his first night? Im hoping he sleeps like a rock as usual. I am going to be very bummed if his awesome sleep pattern that I worked so hard to get him to do is interrupted. He is a solid 12-14 hour sleeper. Do I have sleepless nights ahead?- Cole gets his DOCband today!! :( EEEK

Hi -

Good luck with today's fitting! My son was much older when he received

his band and I was convinced that because he was already " set in his

ways " that we might experience some problems adjusting to his band,

but to my surprise, he took to it without any problem at all. He slept

in it the very first night for 12+ hours without making a peep (which

may not happen for every baby, but it's not completely out of the

ordinary). I do believe it may sometimes be harder for younger babies

to adjust to sleeping in it because they may not be as mobile in sleep

and may not be able to find a really good position to sleep in (my son

was sleeping on his belly with his butt in the air by the time he got

his band, and apparently that was the comfortable position he chose to

stick with). So hopefully it won't be too bad for you tonight, I'll be

hoping that if he's such a good sleeper already, he will maintain that

even with the band.

Good luck! Let us know how everything goes!

Maybe? You usually don't have them in the helmet/band all that long the first few days anyway. All depends on your kid. Most seem to not mind them at all. My daughter was not one of those. Took us a good month to get used to it enough the fit throwing stopped. Even then she slept pretty OK in it from the start once she calmed down. She was a great sleeper before though, so you may just be in luck. ^_^

Good luck and I hope it goes well. Marcus was a great sleeper before

and after the band (he got it at age 4.5months). He fussed a bit more

for a few nights, but I honestly couldnt say it was the band and not

the cold he came home from daycare with around the same time. If Cole

was a good sleeper before, chances are he'll just need a small

adjustment period and will go back to having good nights very quickly.

Keep us posted.

Well Cole was up about six times last night before he finally fell asleep at 2 am... he slept till about 9:30 so I guess it wasnt too bad. I just hope he gets more sleep tonight. Overall he doesnt seem to notice he has anything on his head. Its not as bad as I thought it was going to be at all. Aside from the sleeping thing and getting the courage to go out in public things are pretty normal.I have question regarding decorating though. When we were being fitted yesterday they recommended waiting till after his first adjustment in case they needed to trim more from the helmet. Did you all wait to decorate? We are having it professionally painted so its not like I can touch it up if they decide to cut more from the helmet and ruin the paint job.Lastly, if I decide to decorate the

band myself how do I begin? What do I start with and what do I coat it with to avoid paint chips? Thanks!Cole is - going on day 2 in DOCbandFrom: ransomsd <ransomsd@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Monday, December 1, 2008 9:39:15 PMSubject: Re: first night in helmet...

Hi --

All of that sliding around freeked me out at first as well. It's

fine. They have to have room to grow into it. Hopefully you will get

a good growth spurt and you can literally see it slide around less

and less each day. Then when they shave out more of the band, you

might have some sliding again.

Also, you may be just fine on the sleeping. Merrick is also a 12 hour

sleeper and that has continued. The first couple nights he woke up a

couple times, but now it's back to normal. I hope the same for you!!

My daughter, Maysa, always slept a lot but also woke up several times at night (for nursing, I thought). When she received her DOC band, it seemed like she woke up more often at first. Then shortly after that, I started CST with her and almost immediately, she started sleeping several hours in a row to the point where she only wakes up once at night to nurse. Her daycare provider tells me that she sleeps sometimes 4 hours in a row during the day, which is a lot, I think.

So, while some babies' sleep doesn't seem to be bothered by the band while sleeping, others need to get used to it.

Hopefully Cole won't be phased by it at all.

Good idea on getting stickers till we get it painted. Maybe Ill first outing will be to Target today to get some cute scrapbook stickers. Should I apply something over the stickers to keep them from peeling off? Thanks - From: <nwilkens2275@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Tuesday, December 2, 2008 12:23:20 PMSubject: Re: first night in helmet...

Hi -

Overall, I'd say it wasn't too bad of a night for you, at least he

got 7+ hours of solid sleep, even if you didn't! Hopefully tonight

will go a little more smoothly.

If you're going to pay someone to paint the band, I would wait until

after his first adjustment, otherwise you'll be annoyed that the

paint job was ruined/chipped if they do have to shave more away (for

my son, they cut more away from the ear holes on his first band, and

trimmed his forehead up on the second, but I painted it myself, so

it was no big deal to touch it up). For the next week, maybe just

throw some stickers on it to keep it from looking so stark white,

until you get it painted. I would recommend clear/plastic stickers

as opposed to paper/white stickers, they peel off easier.

BTW, the first public experience is the hardest. I remember being

very aware of everyone around me, but I made our first outting the

grocery store, where the deli people, cashiers and baggers all

recognize us, and it wasn't nearly as intimidating (they just

chatted us up as normal and if they asked about his hat, it seemed

more out of genuine concern or caring, rather than just plain old

curiosity). Once you get past that first outting, it gets easier

until you forget they're even wearing it!

Good luck!

Thanks so much for the tips on painting. I might go out today since his schedule is lax. But tomorrow he is supposed to be wearing it full time. I feel pretty confident that I can do this now! Thanks for posting that pic. I love that color blue you used.- Cole - day 2 in DOCbandFrom: ransomsd <ransomsd@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Tuesday, December 2, 2008 12:53:23 PMSubject: Re: first night in helmet...

Hi --

I decorated Merrick's band, and it went smoother than I thought.

There are some great detailed directions in the files folder. I

painted on acrylic paint with a 1" synthetic brush (three coats),

then added vinyl stickers, and finished with two coats of modge podge

(painted on with a foam brush). I read one mom suggested doing an

additional layer of modge podge after paint and before the stickers--

that way if you have to remove a sticker or reposition it, it won't

ruin your paint job--I wish I would have done that. I used a blow

dryer on cool and low to help dry between coats. I painted and

decorated it the first day we got it--and I was glad that I did. The

schedule is a bit more lax on those first days and it looked so much

better. I realize that I have provided a lot of tips on decorating--

but haven't yet shared a photo--so I just posted one in the 'M'

folder. We did a skater theme--a rip off of the 2008 calendar. There

are lots of ideas in those calendars. And I ordered the stickers from

stickergiant. com, but you can also get them at s.
