Guest guest
Hi guys, It has been a while since I posted. I hope everyone is doing well. We needed your humble opinion. We have been eating SCD now for 6 and a half months. As most of you know we are practicing SCD by the book and with " fanatical adherence " and having wonderful success as a family. Needless to say, last week, we introduced candy with nuts to our 2 year old (Kiki) and I wish we had not. I assumed that since we all where doing so well that it was going to be OK and she was ready. She truly enjoyed this treat. The book says six months. But our experiment blew up in our face. This candy nut roll, caused her a set back and a flare of " celiac " like diarrhea and much pain. I still do not know if it was the boiled HONEY (to make the candy) or the NUTS in the stuff?? Thankfully the rest of our celiac family did fine with this much needed treat. I have heard that some have problems when the honey is boiled into candy. Is this true? After going back to intro foods and increasing her acidophilus and yogurt we got her back into balance and avoided a hospitalization. With every set back, it does not take her long to thin down, since she is growing so fast. This always seems to worsen her ASD problems too for the set back duration only. So, she never " looses " weight but her body becomes much thinner...and her behavior becomes more asd like. Does this make since? We are becoming very frustrated with this roller coaster ride. I know that Elaine said two years for cd...but I am often fearful that we may be doing something wrong. I (cd myself) have gained a much needed 16 pounds so I know that SCD is not to blame. But my SCD food choices and preferences are much broader than hers now. I am very concerned about her being so thin. She looks better and is growing much better than six months ago, thanks to SCDiet. Her ASD problems have almost all but vanished. But at the age of 2 she is as tall as an average 2T but has the waist of a baby that wears 9-12 month clothes! Does any body have anything to suggest??? She still can not tolerate the beans or peanuts either. She refuses to eat the baked goods at all. I think she thinks that they are poison or something. Before we went SCD we where gf and the starches/grains and refined sugars made her deathly ill! This leaves our SCD choices for her being the SCD yogurt (both goat and bovine), cheeses, dry curd, meats, eggs, fruits and vegetables. WE are truly having a difficult time putting weight on her. Like many kids on this list serve, she is PICKY too! Yet, if we could accomplish this feat and get her to gain weight, she would look even better. It would be nice if we didn't have to pen her pants up anymore. Is this just going to take time and we need to become more patient?????...or is there something that we should be doing...or not doing. Ideas please... Thank you, Antoinette and (both celiac), parents to three kids (celiac, colitis, adhd, ASD, and hyperekplexia)
