Guest guest
Hi Maureen, > The legal additives list shows " Magnesium stearate " . Is " vegetable > Stearate " the same thing? No. Vegetable stearate is a free flow agent/binder produced from stearic acid that comes from vegetables - it is legal in supplements. Magnesium sterate is a magnesium salt which can come from either beef or vegetable sources - it is also legal in supplements. > Also is Candex " Yeast Management System " ,legal? Yes. > > My son follows the diet very strictly but he also takes (via our DAN > doctor's advice) the following probiotics which are illegal -- > " Cultrelle " and " Probiotic Support Formula " from New Beginnings > (which I believe is illegal). Yes, both of these are illegal. " Culturelle " contains inulin (illegal - it promotes growth of harmful microbes) and Lactobacillus gg which is not an SCD recommended probiotic bacteria. The " Probiotic Support formula " contains a number of illegal probiotic strains including Bifidobacteria. You can read more on " Inulin " at http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/g_to_o.htm He has been on SCD for five months > now. Although some doctors are for SCD, many of them are not familiar with the reasons why some supplements etc. are considered SCD illegal. Over the past 5.5 yrs I have read of many people whose doctors meant well in prescribing something that was considered SCD illegal but these people ended up in flares or with setbacks. > > He also takes " Inositol Powder " from New Beginnings -- does anyone > know if it is legal? Inositol is a sugar alcohol and is illegal as a supplement. (a teeny amount in a supplement is " okay " - but may cause bowel problems). If he is taking a lot of this indigestible by human powder, it will feed the bifidobacterium and any other nasties still in his gut. > He also takes: Selenium Liquid, Zinc, Legal >Chelate Mate, SCD legal but please read section in BTVC about mineral supplementation. >Allicillin Liquid (from Garlic), legal. >Basic Nutrients Plus from New Beginnings, Legal, please see section in BTVC about vitamin supplementation. > MCT Liquid, > and Grape Fruit seed extract, and B-12 shots every 3 days. What foods is he eating now? Have you done the intro at any point? Do you use any of the yogurt: Cow, goat or nut? Guest guest
My advice would be to pull out all illegal supplements including the probiotics, and switch to legal forms. I know that the B12 shots are fine, and you can use the Kirkman probiotic that you mentioned. Someone else should be able to advise you on whether the other supps he's on are legal. The fact the you saw improvement in the first two months, and then saw behavior diteriorate after that...which coincides with introduction to certain illegal(and maybe even legal) supps is a red flag that you saw as well. Sometimes, a legal supp will just not " agree " with a person. I would go back to the intro. You can pull all supps, start at intro with a legal probiotic, and then gradually introduce new foods and supps from there. The other option would be to go back to intro, and just pull all illegal supps. Hope this helps.
