Guest guest
Hi Kristi, I had surgery on Aug 30 and stayed at the Hawthorn suites for 8 nights. There are many places to eat right within walking distance, fast food and sitdown, also a food lion and a cvs drugs right next door. The problem is it takes at least fifteen to twenty minutes to get to the clinic or the hospital from there, so you have to do that 3 times, perhaps you could find out from the hotel what it might cost to take a taxi. My husband and I got pretty bored sitting around the hotel, the malls and other things to do or see is quite far away. If it was me I would stay in a less expensive place like the one T stayed in, extended stay america for $199 a week and rent a car. Med stay has a car company they use they say is cheeper, but I had already used priceline.com to get my car. I wouldn't recommend that because I thought I was going to have to cancel because of a cold and you have to pay for it even if you can't use it. The Hawtorn Suites was nice because of the size of the suites and three TVs but it had a faded glory type of look to it. We never even looked at the pool as it rained the whole time we were there. The breakfast they provide is doable but nothing great. The gym is off site and we never did see that. One thing good I can say is I did not have any trouble sleeping on the bed, it was comfortable whice is important to me. I sat in the easy chair with my legs on a coffe table most of my time in the suites. The couch was uncomfortable because it is a hideabed and had no suppot unless you put both cushions on one side. If I can help further just ask. Guest guest
I agree with Ms. California. If you really need wheels (and I'm one who does! LOL), then do as Marjory suggested. The Hawthorn Suites is not a plush hotel, BUT the second bathroom and separate living area/kitchen is GREAT, especially when you're there for a week. Guest guest
Kristi, I just came home from there tonight. A couple of things. There is a Food Lion Grocery Store, A chinese restaurant, a cleaners, another rest., and a Kinkos within walking distance. In fact it is a great walk, which really helps. As far as the Hawthorne goes. I will first say it was very nice, stocked well and clean. As far as reservations go. There rate for a one bedroom suite if you book yourself or just show up is $139.00. If you make your reservations through the Med-Stay it goes down to $55.00. So there seems to be a big advantage to going through the med-stay. Check and double check about the shuttle. I went down the night before my post op clinic visit, and the girl said " Sure we go to all the hospitals, what time do you want, I said 8:30, and she wrote it down and said fine. Then she told me he would be a little late, about 8:35 so I waited. He came in at *;35 and prompltygrabbed a man that had just said he needed the shuttle and wisk off. I went to the desk and ask what the problem was, and she said. " Well who told you we go to all the hospitals? " I told her the girl last night, she said, Well these others were short trips, so the driver wants to do them first, so everyone isn't waiting for him to get back from taking you. By now its 8:45 and clinic starts at 9. She finally said, " I called the driver, he doesn't want to go there, he said to call you a cab " , I ask who was paying for the cab, and she had a funny look. The manager finally said, well we will give you $15 but thats all. The cab ride there was $35.00. Its quite a ways. I will say for the return to the hotel trip the shuttle did come. An hour late, but he did come. So beware and very clear on your needs if you are going to rely on the hotel shuttle. Bob
Guest guest
Bob, Thanks for that info. I wasn't able to get in the Hawthorne, I will be at the Duke Towers and I am renting a car. I would have been SO MAD about the shuttle thing! You know I would have let them have it!!!! Thanks and Congrats on your safe trip to the other side.
