Guest guest
You have certainly done all you can with that person. Sooooooooooooo, Now you can do the following: Write a letter & with all the info that you have here & anything else that happened . All her language...about the coughing, etc. THEN , ADD THE MEETING WITH THE PRINCIPAL, and that conversation. SEND THIS TO THE SCHOOL BOARD REP FROM YOUR AREA OR EACH SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER .. copy IT TO THE PRINCIPAL & THAT SUB......ATTACH A COPY OF THE 504 YOU HAVE FILED. REMIND THEM IN THE LETTER THAT IS A LEGAL DOCUMENT. i would also add that I would be monitoring their classes the rest of their years attending that school ,so they had better not treat your kids wrongly because of this letter. The next letter will be to the TV stations & the State Education Secretary.. & the governor..... Now most wouldn't send the letter. I would............... But write it...it will make you feel better too. Things like that send my Irsh fighting blood way up over the TOP. I taught school 20+ years......I never allowed things like that in my classes..............That is sooooooo wrong!! O.K. , Now its your turn back up on that soap box.You earned it . i have more of those school booklets if you want to send with your letter(hehe) or send one to each teacher in school & the school board! LOVE & HUGS, grandmoMBEV schools - ugh!!!!!!!!!!! Hey guys, Well, I finally have a little time to write. So far, my boys are doing well. They are on antibiotics for two weeks for a lung thing. Seems like they always do things together - even if it is getting sick. Then they passed it to me. So now I am running around trying to stay away from them and not give it back again. I am sure you all know what I am talking about. Yesterday I had to drag myself up to the school - again. I am getting so tired of dealing with this school. They have me to the point of wanting to smack someone. It is a constant argument with them. Teachers that wont pay attention to anything. I have come to the conclusion that they dont care - I mean its not their kids so not their problem. Dont get me wrong, there are a few that I love to death. We are dealing with " if you leave class to go to the nurse or the bathroom, you get a tardy. Three tardies you get after school detention " . I DONT THINK SO! This argument is ongoing. Yes, we have the 504 plan in place. Not that it does any good. Last week we had to go to the school over being called a baby in front of the entire class. I dont know how to shorten this story. Lets see - substitute teacher. Tells the class they can talk among thereselves. Of course they get loud. She yells at them (no biggie). She says I dont want to hear you talk, breath, clear your throat or even cough. Well, can't help it and coughs (most kids w/cf do). She gets on to him, he tells her he cant help it, he has a condition that makes him cough. She says " Fine, if he wants to be a baby about it, then let the baby cough " , in front of the class. A friend of his stood up and told her not to talk to him like that, that he had a disease that makes him cough. She told him to shut up and sit down. So - you can imagine how _issed off I was when he got home. I called up there to tell her to stay there I was on my way. Everyone was already gone. (probably a good thing) The next morning we took it a step above the principal. This was the principals response - " Kids shouldn't run home every time they are called a name - this is something they need to learn to deal with - it will happen all through their lives. " Excuse me, but I think she is full of something, I am just trying to find a nice word for it. I said " true, they may grow up with it in their lives - but NOT from a teacher in their school " . Needless to say the other man we were in front of agreed with me. We filed a complaint and she probably wont be back in the school again. There was more to the story - cussing in class and putting kids down for their beliefs. Just an all around bad deal. The principal has this philosophy of taking up for the teachers automatically, wtihout listening to the kids at all. I am really serious when I say she does not like me anymore. I am trying not to be overbearing, overprotecting, etc.... But, I am at my wits end with the whole deal. They dont get their meds on time half the time (but they cant carry them themselves). They get each others meds (inhalers), which I have explained to them that cant keep happening - there is the cross contamination issue. I dont know. I have taken all the books, tapes etc..... to them. I have just come to the conclusion that a majority of people dont care when it does not concern them or their families. Sorry, just had to gripe for awhile. Didn't mean for it to be so long winded. Vondie

Guest guest
I cannot believe teachers talk to any kids like that. I am in shock. Though I hated school for that too. No matter how many times my parents went to the school, or how many times I had to tell the teacher that I cough and this and that, it was always forgotten. Keep yelling at those teachers, your kids don't have to deal with that. CF or no CF. That's awful. Coughing at school is such a silly thing, the way that it makes kids feel I mean. Now that I am an adult coughing is just that, and I never worry about it. Or rarely worry. But as a kid I remember it being horrifying. I was always hacking away at the most inappropriate times, like during a quiet time reading, or a presentation, or an assembly. It made me feel so self-conscious and strange. I hated it. So for a teacher to add to that is just unbelievable. Makes me mad. Are these people not supposed to be adults. Adults don't call kids babies..... > Hey guys, > Well, I finally have a little time to write. So far, my boys are > doing well. Guest guest
Vondie, This is awful. I can't give you any advice as we don't need 504 plans here and we have had great teachers. But no adult should have to speak like that to children. It obviously makes her feel superior to belittle children. I hope he wont have anyone do that to him again. Guest guest
Oh, Vondie! this is unbelievable and unacceptable!!!! If it were me and I had done all that you have done I would call a lawyer and scare the cr@p out of them!!!! I would even consider taking it to the media. To mix up the kids meds is just plain wrong. are they mixing up other kids meds? This is serious! OOOHHH I would be raising HECK right about now! Guest guest
YES. i still think , as i said in earlier post That the letter needs to go to school board members & cc to the principal so she knows ANYTHING she does will be watched . YES, It is a legal document............NO child or parent should have anymore on their shoulders .It is enough in day to day living. LOVE & HUGS to you & precious the children!! Guest guest
Vondie, I am a former teacher and I can't believe a teacher, even a sub, would talk like that to a child. Also, for the princlpal to think it is okay is appalling. If you have a 504 plan in place, the staff can not violate or ignore it. It is the law. I am not sure what state you live in, but with your 504 plan you should have recieved a copy of parental rights. In that document there are guidelines for parents to file greivences. Find out what you need to do, then go to the administration office and tell them you want to file a grievance because your child's 504 is being ignored. Since you can take them to court, this will probably get their attention. Take advantage because here are laws to protect your children. You will be surprised at how fast things change once the school hears lawsuit. Well, at least as far as the 504 goes. Good luck, Colleen Mom to Elyse almost 3 w/cf schools - ugh!!!!!!!!!!! Guest guest
Vondie, It really tries your patience doesn't it. My daughter has had several teachers like that over the years, so she has gotten so she doesn't tell the teachers about her cf. The school nurse knows but that is all unless she tells someone else. This year she got a doctors note for physical education class because she had a new PE teacher that on the second day of school when it was 95 degrees C. outside had them running laps and doing push ups and stuff on the black top outside. Then when they came into the building he would not let them get any water to drink. The class period was 50 minutes in length. The note she took said that due to her illness that would participate according to her discretion. You have to know my Steph, but she has never used her disease to not have to do something. The teacher made a big deal about it in front of the class. Embarrassed her! She finally told him that she had CF, and of course he didn't know what that was. She printed off some stuff and took it to him a few days later so he could be familiar with what it was. He said to her in class " You don't look sick. " He later apologized to her and said that his wife really jumped his case for doing this. He was an x-military person and I think he thought he was still in the army. I don't know!! When Natalia shared her philosophy with us, Steph took a copy of it to school and gave it to him to read. She said this is what it is like to have this disease. So I know how hard it is to deal with these teachers and counselors. Very frustrating and maddening. Keep up the good work. Tina W., mother of Steph, 18yo wcf schools - ugh!!!!!!!!!!! Vondie
Guest guest
Sounds to me like a nice letter from a lawyer, on their very nice letter head of course, might be required. Not to sue you understand, ;-) but to make them aware that their actions are being recorded and will be considered as discriminating against a person with a disability. Guest guest
I'm in Canada so I don't know what a 504 is but it sounds like this teacher is a bully - and that is not tolerable in anyone! And as far as kids running home and " telling " - that is what we teach kids to do - if an adult acts inappropriately tell! Does the principle have e mail? If so what if you posted it and we all wrote to her. This kind of treatment of your children is WRONG! I hope you get some action soon. Carolyn Mark & Colleen Mancilla wrote: Vondie, I am a former teacher and I can't believe a teacher, even a sub, would talk like that to a child. Go to top of your school district - then the Board of Ed of your state. I wonder if you would be better off getting them classified OTI - other health impaired. If the teachers are stupid about a 504 maybe an IEP would clarify it for them? Any corrspondence with the school send Certified mail return receipt requested and keep copies of EVERYTHING in a file.
