Use saline solution (Ayr or Ocean) before using the brain sucker. This

will break down the mucus and allow you go get more out. If you use it on

a pretty consistant basis, it helps to keep things thinned out and will

help to prevent sinus infections.

Take care!

Subject: THICK nasal

secretions--HELP!

My son started out with some allergies last week with clear

drainage. Now it is so thick I can hardly suck it out with a bulb

syringe. We are using guaifenisin, sudafed, flonase and plenty of

gatorade to keep it all clear but it doesn't seem to be working. The

antihistimine seemed to make it all thicker. Can we double the

guaifenisin? Do kids with CF have thicker nasal mucus too? He is

only 31 months so he doesn't really blow his nose very well. The

secretions now are also a little yellow. I left a message with both

the CF dr and the pediatrician this afternoon but I'd be surprised if

I heard from them.

Any suggestions would be great.

My daughter's is like glue!!!! Try more chest pt's and hot baths - maybe the

steam will loosen stuff.

We buy the sterile saline in plastic little ampules from the

drugstore. I was apprehensive about the other stuff and nobody could

tell me if the other stuff was sterile. Pa obviously grows in salty

environments and in water so.......

Also after you irrigate the nose (2-3 drops with him lying on back)

then give it a few minutes and do it again then after a few more do

the suctioning. The stuff doesn't immediately get runny - it takes a

few minutes so save all your fighting until you have some

good " suckable " snot. Lovely, eh?

When ever Patti gets this way I have the clinic put her on a preventive

antibiotic as well as all of the things you are trying. The sudafed will make

it thicker. We only use that kind of stuff at night if she is having so much

trouble with drainage that she can't sleep. 's vapor bath (the green

bottle) works really great for helping loosen up the crud that's stopped up in

her head.
