Guest guest
Dear jules325, It's not going to get better on its own. If you don't like what you see, and they're offering you a helmet, get the helmet. You have been granted the grace to speak to the correct professional at the correct time, and they have correctly deferred to your paramount judgment. Pediatricians often antagonize a parent in your position, telling them that it will most certainly get better, or worse, referring them for evaluation of sequelae rather than addressing the problem. Six months later, when it becomes apparent that the pediatrician didn't know what they were talking about, the parent finds their options to be limited, difficult, or absent. If someone had told me my daughter's head would end up like it is (I think she also is " low end of moderate, " but I don't scrutinize measurements) I would have personally held her in my arms for three weeks, forgoing sleep, and squeezed her skull into shape myself, rather than endure the stress of the bullshit I've been put through. And I'm one of the lucky ones: my insurance approves! Madam, your problem does not warrant three question marks and an exclamation point, and I sincerely hope you do not anguish yourself over this very easy, non-technical decision. -- Thad Launderville Montpelier, VT Clara 16.5 mo, STARband since 8/10 On Aug 28, 2009, at 12:23 PM, julesw325 wrote: > Hi All, > > Ok, so I mentioned in a previous post that we went to Cranial Tech > to have my 5 month old DD's head evaluated. Guest guest
Hm...based upon what I've read about the measurements on this board, I would say that those measurements are really more like in the mild range. Having said that, it's important to remember that the numbers don't typically tell the whole story...plus, there appears to be some measurement error with hand measurements. The main answer for what to do about a band is really how you feel about her head. If you'd like correction, then your best bet would be to get a helmet. At that age, you might have a little time left for repositioning, but if she's mobile and moving around in the crib, then these efforts won't work well. , mom to , 2 years STARband grad May 2009 land Should we get a band??? Please help me! Hi All,Ok, so I mentioned in a previous post that we went to Cranial Tech to have my 5 month old DD's head evaluated. They said her case is on the "low end of moderate" and that it was up to us whether or not to get a band. I'd really really love some advice from you guys.I haven't been able to upload the pics yet, but here are her measurements. I don't know what they mean, so I'm hoping some of you do!Cranial Width: 117 mmCranial Length: 138 mmCephalic Index x 100: 84.8 Std Deviation: +2.45Cranial Vault Asymmetry: 7 mm (Left 119, Right 126)Mid-Face Asymmetry: 1 mm (Left 39, Right 38)Skull-Base Asymmetry: 1 mm (Left 72, Right 73)Traditional Cranial Vault Asym: 3 (Left 120, Right 123)What do you think????? Guest guest
I would recommend getting the helmet. My son was at the low end of moderate as well and he was banded by Cranial Tech on July 23rd at almost 6 months old. It has been six weeks since he was banded and he has done so well and made such great progress that he is " graduating " next Friday. I'm still a little unsure of what all the numbers mean but I can say from my experience if you think the helmet is needed, get it. I can't say enough about how wonderful the people at Cranial Tech are and how great the experience has been. Our insurance wouldn't pay for Cranial Tech so we paid out of pocket and I would do it ten more times if I had to. The change in my son's head shape is amazing and when you take the helmet off you would never know he had to wear it. Your daughter is at the perfect age to get the helmet so I would say if you're gonna do it, do it now. If you're worried about her reaction or other people's reactions to the helmet I can tell you from my experience neither was a big deal. Tyler adapted within one day to having the helmet on and sleeping with it(in fact he looks for it now when I take it off to clean it). It's really interesting to me to see how strangers react to the helmet. I put " handsome " on the front of the helmet (along with other stickers on the sides and back) and when anyone see's it they usually say " hi handsome " and stop to say how cute he is. Good luck with making your decision and like I said if you are going to do it now is the time.
