Guest guest
Vonny, If he got an illegal in the supplement, even for a short time, it could certainly cause a flare up. He also may be at that point where it's just very common to have another flare.... and/or more die-off. Some people find they have to step clear back to doing a day or two of the intro diet, and advancing slowly from there. It *could* be that you just went a little too quickly with advancing to foods that were harder to digest, too.... but I'm more suspicious of the illegal cal-mag. That could cause symptoms that hang on, even though you've changed the supplement back. I also just don't know about the other supplement.... whether it can cause problems or not, I don't know. Are you absolutely sure there are no illegals in the methionine as well? I know it's frustrating to have gone two steps forward and now have to take one back.... but it will be okay. This is how it goes for many kids.... ups and downs. You should be able to get him back on track in short order with just a day or so of intro. Maybe on the weekend, if that's more convenient for you? If you had gone on to raw veggies and fruits already... it may be that it was too soon.... or that at least you will have to go back to cooked for a while now. My daughter has been on SCD since May (this time around.... was on it for 18 months in 2003-04), and she STILL can't tolerate raw foods. Also.... are you absolutely sure there is zero opportunities for him to be getting illegals at school or something? I'm just asking b/c this time of year, just after kids have gone back to school, it's pretty typical to get reports of accidental ingestion of another kid's animal cracker or something like that. That very thing happened with MY daughter last week.... I wanted to cry!! hang in there, Patti problems 4 months in Hi everyone We are 4 months into SCD with myself (ADD and pain syndrome), my 3 yr old daughter with a lot of stomach issues, and a few odd behavioural issues, and my son 5, ASD. We started the diet after 3 months of horrible diarrhea from my son and it was such a relief for this to disappear, but now it seems to be returning, and I just don't know why. Starting this was SOOO hard and stressful, and I just don't know if I have the strength to start again, but I am also very determined not to give in. He is eating pretty much all foods allowed on the diet except legumes, and whole nuts. He is having goat milk yogurt, as per protocol from this site. We started very slowly with the initial diet for 5 days, and inroducing new foods slowly at first, but he was doing so well we speed up a bit in month 2-3. Then at 3 months diarrhea returned, and everything went very pale. I heard that this can happen at 3 months, but it hasn't gone away. I tried taking out raw fruit and veges, but this made it worse, so I put them back in. WE also started a new supplement, methionine, at this time. I have stopped this, but I do not know if this is related. His appitite is really variable now as well, as it was before the diet. He never asks for food anymore, but is drinking a lot of juice. It has been so frustrating, as although his digestion seemed better immediately I never saw any behavioural changes until very recently when I changed his calcium/magnesium supplement. (the shop had insisted the old one did not have anything illegal in it, but I was suspicious and it turned out it did.) Any advice would be extremely appreciated. I am really unsure what to do at this point. Vonny
Guest guest
Vonny, You are correct that many people have a " set back " around the three month mark, and it is due to more die off. My guess would be that when you removed the raw fruit and vegies, it produced more die off. Three months is much too soon to introduce raw fruits and vegies. In fact, I started giving my son some raw fruits that were softer(peaches, strawberries, ect.) about six to eight weeks into the diet because he was doing so well. He began screaming in his sleep like he did often prior to scd. I thought it might be some other foods, and finally figured out with the help of this list that it was the raw stuff. It was simply too soon. I removed them, and the sleep issues stopped. I would recommend that you return to the intro diet, and start from scratch again. Remember that you must, must, must introduce foods slowly even if it seems like your child is healing and doing really well. Please don't give up. I know that it was a difficult thing to start, but remember that you did see progress. Take a deep breath, and start again. Just go slowly. Guest guest
Vonny, sounds like the three month flare. The three months may vary in people. For some its 2 1/2 months for others it could be 4 months. Anyway, What has happened is you have starved out the less virulent bugs and saw some great relief. Now the ones that are stronger are coming to the forefront and are having a last hurrah! Don't give in to them! They will eventually die. My best advice is to pull back on what you are eating and perhaps do the intro again for a couple days or at least trim some of the harder to digest foods from his diet for now. Guest guest
Thanks to all that answered. It is great to get advice from those who have been there done that, I will do the intro diet again for a couple of days and take out raw foods for a while longer. He has pretty much stopped eating most foods apart from intro diet one over the last few days, so I guess that has to tell me something! He just is very difficult to feed vegetables if they are cooked and he was so excited to get raw again. Still struggling with veges is better than constant diarrhea - I hate to think what that must be doing to his little system. > > Vonny, > > sounds like the three month flare.
