Guest guest
To be SCD legal, the yogurt MUST be fermented for a full 24 hours. Patti 1st time making yogurt and messed up a little... A friend came over with her Salton yogurt maker and helped me make goat's milk yogurt with SCD legal starter. Unfortunately, I incorrectly assumed directions for yogurt were standard. So, based on yogurt machine instructions and per my friend, I incubated it for 7 hours. Can I give this to her at all? I introduced it at 1/8 tsp today before figuring out the problem. I will discontinue if it is going to cause problems digestively. I can't believe I screwed up!! Jen
Guest guest
Jen, You will not be able to use the yogurt as there will still be fair amount of lactose in the yogurt yet. Boy if I had a dollar for all the yogurt batches I screwed up before I got it right! It seems like such a waste of milk but thems the breaks I suppose. I have heard from someone on this list that the Salton has a tendency to overheat. They were told by the manufacturer that it was not meant to run longer than a certain amount of time and so it continues getting hotter the longer it is running. Not great for us who need it to work for 24 hours. Maybe that person can chime in on that one. Guest guest
Okay, no problem. My baby was my quinea pig and here is what I observed in him, so wondering if he should not eat it either! His bowel movement seemed squashy and a little yeasty. He is NT, progressing nicely, no health issues to speak of. He was not SCD, close to, but not - until he had major die-off from commercial Greek yogurt I fed him over a week, all the undigested grains came out - from the little pizza crust he gnawed on, from bits of bread. Now he is strict SCD! And wow - he now eats like a horse and looks so healthy. No more food pickiness, Eats the most amazing things - pureed liver, green vegetables, kale, etc.!! If I had only known about this, before baby number 3 and daughter with ASD!! Anyway, back to the point - Would the yogurt at this incubation time contribute to yeast or is it more of a bacterial issue/cause of diarrhea/indigestion issue?? I've heard yogourmet is a good machine. What do you think? What one do you recommend? I am going to order one this week so we can get started! She is in desperate need of good bacteria! Jen, mom to Evie SCD since June - getting easier every day! I am now a fanatic about this diet!! > > Jen, > > You will not be able to use the yogurt as there will still be fair amount of lactose in the yogurt yet. Guest guest
I own a Yogourmet machine, and I've never had a problem. I also purchased an extra yogurt container insert, so that I can get a second batch going before the first is gone. I also remember recently someone having a problem with the Salton, and were told that it was only meant to run a certain amount of time...That's my two cents. Guest guest
I think you are referring to my post a few weeks ago about Salton. I used my Salton twice and both times checked the yogurt temp after the 24 hours and it was too hot. I called Salton, and they said it is only meant to go 6-10 hours and past that it continues to heat up. It does not appear that the Salton yogurt makers are reliable enough for SCD yogurt. I now have a Yogourmet, and the two batches I have made in it appear to be fine. Lynn Re: 1st time making yogurt and messed up a little...
