Hey Meg--

Last weekend, I couldn't stand the stink, so I did my clean the

helmet and bath routine during the day and set the helmet out in the

sun for a bit and whamo! Not one little bit of stink. That is the

best thing that I have found yet to help--it kills off the germs. I

can't do that every day, so I do the scrubbing with the 91% alcohol

routine every day (both with a washcloth followed by the toothbrush)

and of course wash his hair everyday. And I try to do the sun thing

once or twice per week.

Good luck!

My son is in a Hanger helmet, and we have had some " not so fresh " days

as well, LOL. I also use the 91% alcohol to do a final wipe and dry.

However, my orthotist recommended washing out with a washcloth and

babywash first, wiping all soap out, drying, then alcohol. I know

there are mixed reviews on the use of soaps in any of these

bands/helmets. My best results with NO smell after washing: Ultra Dawn

Antibacterial Orange Scent followed by the alcohol treatment.

Hi Meg-

I'm going to refrain from telling you what the temperature is here in

San Diego ;). It's been awhile since I have been in 15 degree

weather, and this is my novice opinion, but here are my thoughts. If

it is a day that is skin crackling cold--I might not do it because

there might be a bit of moisture in the helmet, and you wouldn't want

the foam to crack--not sure if that is even possible--but might not

be worth trying. But if it is a day not like that, and the sun is

shining bright then I would go for it. It really only took a few

minutes--the results were amazing. I wonder if putting it on a piece

of aluminum foil might also speed the process along so that it's not

out in the cold that long. Then of course you would have to warm it

up inside a bit before putting it back on. You could also try that

inside by a window. Let us know how it works :).
