Hello from Durham!

This week I'm a soccer mom to a friend's 10-year old daughter whom I

wanted to bring to Duke's Soccer Camp for Girls. It has given me a renewed

appreciation of Duke as well as parenting...

Read our report on what parents need to know about their child's snoring,

tips for parents of colicky babies, and the story from East Carolina

University where Joe Kalinowski, Ph.D., and colleagues have developed a

device to help kids who stutter avoid the childhood trauma of taunting and

teasing. An interesting and perhaps not well-known fact is that stutterers

don't stutter when speaking in unison with others, which this new device

addresses.

We also have other stories on our site this week with some interesting

facts, such as our interview with Dr. Klein from the University of

Minnesota. Dr. Klein is working on a SELECT Trial looking at the possible

effects of vitamin E and/or selenium in preventing prostate cancer. Make

sure you read this report to learn more about this trial, and the

surprising information about Vitamin E and beta-carotene's effects on

certain cancers. Also see the story about the remarkable advances being

made in the treatment of prostate cancer that are eliminating such dreaded

side-effects as impotence, and the report from Kansas on the endoscopic

ultrasound which is helping increase the accuracy of diagnosing GI

cancers.

We have two special reports in our Archives. One is our new whitepaper,

" Diabetes: The Emerging Research, " and the other is a compilation of

full-length doctor's interviews with three leading doctors from Mt. Sinai

School of Medicine, Bancroft, and Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical

Center on developments in treatments for autism.

The aspartame story we covered last week incited a lot of interest, so we

have put up a discussion room on the subject. If you have anything you'd

like to say about this controversial topic, please post your comments!

And there's more where that came from...
