Guest guest
The typical grocery store turkey is injected with seasonings, broth and tenderizers that do have illegals in them.... sad to say. I've had to buy the " organic " or natural turkey from Wild Oats or Whole Foods type stores.... sometimes carried in a regular supermarket. Patti Turkey Question With Thanksgiving coming up on us, I had a turkey-related question. We always have big family gatherings and most of the family does not have much money or time. Since my husband is around stage 2, we are planning on bringing his own pumpkin pie, cranberry jello (or apple cranberry jello), and maybe a veggie or two depending on what is being served. My question is, how safe is regular turkey if they use SCD-safe seasonings? They usually get cheap or free turkeys with store awards and discounts. Are most store bought turkeys injected with a broth or flavorings of some kind? If so, I can bring some safe turkey cutlets I bought at a health food store. I prefer not to, because I know my family will want him to eat something along with everyone else. They love to bless with food, but there are too many people to try to educate about SCD. -Sharon Wife of Adam - Diagnosed w/ Crohn's 2004 - SCD since June 2006
Guest guest
Hi Sharon, In Canada, you can get both plain turkeys and injected ones at the grocery stores. If the store has a good, knowledgable butcher you could ask them. Does the family baste with illegals or stuff the turkey with bread stuffing etc..? Since Adam is in his first year of healing it will probably be safest to bring his own. Especially if there are more people involved in the cooking all it takes is one little mistake that they forget to tell you about. It took years before my family got the ins and outs of cooking for an SCDer and even now they still make mistakes from time to time.
