Most restaurants *should* be able to bring you a half of an avacado.... plain,

maybe just sliced.... on a lettuce leaf, with nothing added. A lemon wedge on

the side to squeeze over it would be nice... and some salt.

It's pretty hard to order in restaurants.... but steamed veggies should be

available. Tell them you are severely allergic and absolutely must have them

completely plain.

Meat is trickier.... a grilled chicken breast or something *might* be okay but

you'd have to have them swear to you that it was not marinated or seasoned in

anything.... and grilled on a CLEAN grill, with ZERO seasonings.

Just do the very best you can, don't worry too much and climb back on the SCD

wagon when you get back. Have fun.

traveling to NYC-where and what to eat

I am travelling to NYC for 3 days and can take a small cooler with a

few snacks, but I will need to eat out most of my meals. I am

currently not eating dairy, eggs, seafood, coconut, and my DS (still

nursing, he is not coming with me)is extremely sensitive to hidden

gluten. I realize these are tough constraints and I know that I will

not be able to follow 100%.

I am taking some baked snacks, a tub of almond butter, some steamed

veggies, and some meat for the first day, but I am not guaranteed to

have a refridgerator.

Any ideas of where to eat and what to order would be great.

Hi Beth,

The owner of this wonderful restaurant in NYC is doing SCD for himself.

That restaurant got rave reviews on the internet.

Please call in advance to make sure that the owner will be there and

if not ask him to train the other staff members.

This is the response that I got when I asked about a SCD friendly

restaurant in either Manhattan or Brooklyn on another SCD list.

Mine!

Cafe Joul in Manhattan on First Avenue and East 58th Street.

My husband can prepare most fish and meat in a SCD safe way.

Be sure to ask for no Wondra flour on any fish. Many restaurants

will add this at the last minute before sauteeing to give the outer

layer of the fish some extra little crunch.

Also, be sure to remember that special preparation can take extra

time in the kitchen and be extremely clear about what you need

anywhere you go.

Bon appetit!

Unfortunately,I did not get a chance to eat there because my plans had

changed. I do plan to go there sometime soon.

PS. If you plan to be in Brooklyn or lower Manhattan, then I will look

for the recommendations that I got for those areas.

-most vegetarian restaurants are very accomodating to special needs.

you'll find them more in the downtown area: greenwich village, soho,

etc. You can look them up online or using a Zagats.
