Guest guest
I still don't see an answer to Cindy's question. The question is: Why don't other bariatric surgeons use the Billroth II procedure for WLS today? If they used to perform the B II, and found bad side-effects, what does DR. R do to prevent those same side-effects from occuring in his patients? That, I believe, is the question and does deserve to be answered. So, Dr. R, not a challenge, merely a question. If historically the B II has some negative effects 15-20 years out, what if anything do you do that reduces these negative risks? or do you disagree with the premise that their even are problems? I think many of us would like to hear your answer.
Guest guest
Hi Cindy: Funny. I asked the same questions. Dr. Rutledge explained that for years when a lump was found in a woman's breast and it was cancerous, they did a mastectomy. No other options...just wacked them off. Then along came less radical treatment until today we often see just the lump itself taken out. It took years for the medical community to come around..they believe in taking the whole breast because that was the belief of the time and medicine is slow to change. He cited other examples of medical treatments that were used for years which now are not done at all. As to why he went into this type of surgery...I'm not sure. He did say that he risked his whole career because he belives that this is the way to help obese people lose weight and I believe that when he went to work for NC State (?) they told him that he would have to do some bariatric surgery. I think his interest went from there.
