Guest guest
I am very confused with the info I am reading about the possibility of bile reflux.I {pre-op},have severe acid reflux & take 100mg of Previcid daily, which helps, most of the time.In the news over a year ago, I heard that severe chronic acid reflux can increase your chances of esophaegal cancer,up to 30%.Then I heard that WLS could greatly reduce,if not totally eliminate acid reflux.I had been looking at WLS, & when I heard this,my decision to have a WLS was made. Now I hear that the MGB might reduce my acid reflux, only to replace it with Bile Reflux????Would Previcid do anything for bile reflux??? These complications that I hear, Barret's ,bile reflux & increase chance of cancer, can they be avoided by meds???? Guest guest
Hi: I don't know about the medical stuff. What I read conflicts which each other so I gave up even trying to read all the stuff let alone absorb it and use it to make a decision. What I ended up doing was taking the recommendation of my dr. of 15 years, a gastroenterologist...he said go with MGB. Not only because I had acid reflux but because I had a history of esophagitis, hiatal hernia and ulcers. He thought this was my best choice given my history of digestive problems. What I do know firsthand is that I had a history of acid reflux. I was taking Prilosec during the FDA trials way before it was legal to prescribe it, then was allowed to take it for 11 weeks, rest 30 days, etc. Then once it was approved, it was prescribed for me and I was on it until the day before surgery...maybe 10 years or so. Before that it was Tagamet, Zantac,...you name it, I was on it...because of acid reflux. It kept me awake. I had indigestion all the time. I slept in a chair, I slept on three pillows. Some of this attributable to sleep apnea, some to acid reflux. Since my surgery on 5/31, I have had reflux three times, at night, after having eaten tomato based food (I'm a fool for home made meatballs and sauce) twice and pineapple once. I haven't had it since and I've had tomato based food at least once a week and pineapple since...but not before bed. As to bile reflux, I've never had it. I've only heard of one person on here who has had it...there may be more...hopefully if someone has experienced this you will hear from them via this list. This is a big decision. And this is the place to ask. You'll do the right thing, whatever that may be for you. I did note that you put lap rny by your signature..I'm glad to know that you, like me, value the use of lap rather than open surgery..whichever way you go. My best wishes to you. This is a large life-changing decision. One I'm glad I made.
