Yes, the same thing would happen to my son's bands, mainly on the

sideburn areas. I would just touch it up during his one hour off

when necessary. I never used primer, just paint and mod podge, it

didn't take too long. A full paint job for me would take about an

hour and half, so touchups weren't nearly as long. I used an

oscillating fan to speed up the process.

Hope that helps!

Hey Alison--

I painted my lo's helmet and he also always sleeps on his belly, yet

I haven't had the issue that you described. What type of varnish did

you use? I did a top coat (actually 2 coats) of modge podge and that

has worked great. I do another coat of modge podge every week or two

and his helmet has held up--about five weeks in and no paint 'touch

ups.'

Thanks for your replies! , my baby's helmet is done with one coat of primer, 3 coats of base paint (acrylic), 3 coats of mod podge, and after the first "paint slide" I added 1 or 2 (can't remember) coats of acrylic varnish to the whole thing when I did the touch-up/repair. But I've had another paint slide since I did that. It's those sideburn things that are the problem! Maybe I'll just do as you did and keep adding a coat of varnish every week or so. I got a cheap small bottle of varnish (satin, not high gloss) from

hobby lobby and would reapply just one coat every other night or when

i thought about it (right after i cleaned them) and only had to

reapply the paint in places once during the 2.5 mos they wore them...

the extra clear coat really seemed to keep it protected from wear...

and it gave it a really shiny finish

best of luck,
