Dear Marie-Pia, I am so sorry to hear about Coralie and . Inhae had 3 times of pulse therapies in Aug, Sep and Oct 2000. At that time her flaring relapsed in period of one month. When she changed her diet to vegan AND started to take some supplement medicine(healthfood), she could be better without flaring for 6 month. The contents of the supplement were mainly to make intestine and colon healthy, well balanced of microbes. About two months after she consumed all of the supplement medicine, her flares relapse again. In March of this year, she looked relatively good and could feel better, even though she had scleritis and costochondritis. When I gave her fish, soy milks and potato soups everyday, worrying about her nutritional deficiency, she became very ill and her blood test showed bad result ( CRP was going up 42 & 54 from 19 - under 10 means normal). Elaine Gottschall, the author of "Breaking the Vicious Cycle - Intestinal Health Through Diet", says :' In the healthy intestinal tract, intestinal microbes appear to live in a state of balance; an overabundance of one type seems to be inhibited by the activities of other types. This competition between microbes prevents any one type from overwhelming the body with its waste products or toxins....... However, bacterial overgrowth in the stomach and small intestine can and does occur for various reasons among which are:1) Interference with the high acidity of the stomach through the continual use of antacids;2) A decrease in the acidity of the stomach such as occurs in the aging process;* 3) Malnutrition or a diet of poor quality, and the resulting weakening of the body's immune system;4) Antibiotic therapy which can cause a wide range of microbial changes. Once the normal equilibrium of the colon is disturbed for any reason, its microbes can migrate into the small intestin and stomach hampering digestion, competing for nutrients and overloading the intestinal tract with their waste products' 'A simple approach to minimizing the undesirable activities of intestinal microbes would seem to be through the use of antibiotics. This approach is often tried but, unfortunately, in most chronic intestinal disorders, it has limitations. ..... A sensible and harmless form of warfare on the aberrant population of intestinal microbes is to manipulate their energy(food) supply through diet. MOST INTESTINAL MICROBES REQUIRE CARBONHYDRATES FOR ENERGY...' Considering above-mentioned 3 stories, I came to realise that microbial balance in intestinal is very important, otherwise it possibly causes to flare up, even if it's not the whole picture. In my understanding and experience, a RP-er on Vegan or Vegetarian diet seems to have one hidden trap/risk : RP medications make the inner surface of intestinal weak(less digestive) and disturb the balance of the microbes in it, meanwhile he/she takes much carbohydrate(starch) such as wheat, rice, soy, potato, and most grains. This may result consequently in the overgrowth of intestinal microbes, the ingestion of or endotoxification by their product through intestinals and finally sever flaring of RP. The microbial by-product seems more harmful than the by-product of proteins in the body metabolism. Thus it may be safer for vegan RPers to take continuous countermeasures to keep the intestnal microbes in balanced state. A Colon or Intestinal specialist can help. Antibiotics, repeated enema, colon-health supplement, special diet (much vegetable and fruits, less grains)and change of life-activity/exercise may be helpful case by case. I would like to tell you my one-cent-worth advice : After the pulse therapy for Coralie and , please consult with a colon specialist or health therapist about this intestinal issue. The new(next) treatment for Inhae is based on the same ideas : Healthy intestinal and colon, Clean and healthy blood, Well circulation. Coralie and will become better soon, I hope and pray for. Best regards Moonsung Jun Re: Update on Inhaenice to have good new from Inhae.I tried naturals medecine and vegan diet 4 years ago for Coralie and too.It didn't work enought. But i know it work for some ot rpers.Coralie went back to hospital yesterday .She has to had a bollus (3 days with 1000mg of pred by iv) Maybe immuran is not enough.I'm still waiting the decision of the DRS for .He began on tuesday immuran 100 mg/d and 40mg/d of pred.I waiting fo another good news from you daughter.Be strong: a mother to a other motherBig kiss to Ihnae and you tooMarie-pia
