Guest guest
Holly, I don't know if this is what you want to hear or not but if that was **me** since you did say Kennedy is a little better I would just wait, and take that culture report to her regular doctor when you get home. I have read culture reports and the only thing I think it means is that this is not MRSA. The staph seems to be resistant to just penicillin. I don't know if zithromax would be helpful. As for the gram neg rods you may be right that it is the steno maltophilia. My daughter has that also and we really don't feel it gives her a lot of problems. I hestitate to send this advice as I really don't know either but maybe it is better than nothing. I hope I haven't just confused you further. love, M
Guest guest
Thanks for the reply even if you were unsure if you should have sent it. I haven't recieved anything from anyone. She must have had a sinus infection because her snot was so thick and dark green and now there is less and it is more clear. I am more worried about pneumonia or something. She usually doesn't cough but she is coughing a little and it doesn't sound good. Every time she has had a cold it has turned into a lung problem. I was wondering about the steno maltophilia. Our cf doctor (we are looking for a new one) didn't tell us that she cultured the steno maltophilia until 6 months after the fact. He said that it doesn't need to be treated. How long has your daughter had it? Was she ever treated for it? Thanks for your help, Holly > >Reply-To: cfparents >To: <cfparents > >Subject: Re: need help with culture results >Date: Tue, 30 Dec 2003 18:24:18 -0800 > >Holly, >I don't know if this is what you want to hear or not but if that was **me** >since you did say Kennedy is a little better I would just wait, and take >that culture report to her regular doctor when you get home. Our cf doctor (we are looking for a new one) didn't tell us that she cultured the steno maltophilia until 6 months after the fact. Well that is just rude! He said that it doesn't need to be treated. How long has your daughter had it? Hi Holly, My daughter has had the steno malto since she was 13, so that makes 6 years. Was she ever treated for it? It is sometimes sensitive to Bactrim so yes she has been treated with oral bactrim but not IV's. It is sensitive to IV gentamycin as far as I know. As I said in my other post it doesn't really seem to be causing her any problems. Whenever she gets sick it is usually staph and sometimes (used to be) pseudomonas. Although she hasn't cultured pseudo in a long time. At one point she had 3 strains, one mucoid and two non mucoid. I don't know what we did to get rid of it but it hasn't shown up in a culture for 6 years either, and she has even had a few bronch cultures. I hope Kennedy is feeling better today and doesn't have pneumonia to start the New year! love, M
Guest guest
Hi Holly, I am running late on this one but haven't seen a correct answer to your question about the gram-negative bacteria yet. The lab report says " Gram-negative rods, Haemophilus-like " , so why do you think it could be stenotrophomonas maltophilia? Haemophilus influenza is a common gram-negative bug in our kids (Fiona cultures that combo of staph and h.flu more than once a year) and it usually doesn't cause any problems. Peace Torsten, dad of Fiona 6wcf and Sebastian 6months wocf e-mail: torstenkrafft@... need help with culture results > ------culture results------- > > heavy growth of staphylococcus aureus > Resistance due to probable acquired beta lactamase. > Beta-lactamase resistant penicillins and penicillin inhibitor combinations > usually remain active. > heavy growth Gram-negative rods, Haemophilus-like > heavy growth Gram-negative rods
