My daughter has been on the SCD diet for the last year and has been

eating an insane amount of fruit and dried fruit to keep her blood

sugar stable in the last month. Recently she has become more moody

and spacy (less tuned in). I was wondering about the possibility that

all this fruit is breeding candida. Does anyone know anything about

this? How does this relate to SCD?

Dear ,

Not sure about candida, but when an individual takes in too many

sweets (whether sugar, honey, or fruit sugar), they experience a

temporary boost in blood sugar levels. You initially feel wonderful and

not so great in about 20-30 minuts. This often results in mood swings,

irritability, and often sleepiness. This is why it is important to

include a protein along with a sweet snack or food. The protein buffers

the effects, and blood sugars remain stable. Having a grape drink

alone, or very sweet fruits may create a quick rise in blood sugar

followed by a faster fall. A little protein (cheese, chicken, egg,

meat) will help buffer the rise and the mood will remain more stable.

If you ever notice, eating a very sweet breakfast results in a very

hungry morning. Blood sugar levels drop too quickly and appetite

increases. Moods are more erratic and therefore a meal with a protein

is much easier on blood sugar levels.

Best wishes,

Ronnie

Have you been using the SCD yogurt? And/or supplementing with acidophilus? That

is usually very helpful for taking up the space opportunistic yeast would

otherwise take over once the bad bacteria colonies die.

From what we've seen here, it's possible that yeast can get out of control for

some kids, but it's usually early on in SCD. Generally, keeping the bad bacteria

down and the good flora up just naturally keeps yeast in check.

Although I am no yeast expert, by any means, I have heard that everyone has some

candida in their systems... it's normal, but in small numbers.

Do you use natural anti-fungals like GSE, oil of oregano, garlic, etc?
