Guest guest
Thanks for the links via email, but I did already have those though. What I was asking specifically about was legal for the INTRO diet. And most of those links do not include recipes for cooking without eggs anyway. I really need to know if what I am giving my son NOW is legal for Intro diet, as well as later on the SC Diet. There is really nothing that I can find out there about giving garlic, organic " non-concentrate " fruit juices, etc. are legal or not for the INTRO DIET. My son will NOT eat the meat patties without garlic and salt. I was hoping that I could get some answers from the experienced SCD'ers out here, and other suggestions if what we are doing is NOT legal right now. Otherwise, we may never make it through the intro diet, and my son still has terrible diarhea. Please help!!!!! This diet is very frustrating! Guest guest
, The Knudsen juices that you've been using are illegal. Only use the juices from their " Just Juice " line. I'm not familiar with the apple cider brand you're using, but apple cider usually isn't nationally produced anyway. Is it kept in the refrigerated section of your grocery store? If not, then I'm sure it's not legal. Welch's 100% white grape juice is legal although not organic. Everything else looks fine, but the frying might be encouraging the stool problems. Frying isn't recommended on the intro if you're planning to go back to that. I'm sure some of the moms with pickier eaters than my son can give you some recipe suggestions. I'm not sure if they are all legal, but since he absolutely cannot have eggs or dairy (in any form), plus he won't touch jello (sensory issues) I have had to be creative. Can someone please let me know if these things are legal? He is what he is eating: 1 - ground beef or turkey patties, with organic cut garlic, sea salt, pan fried in organic sunflower oil. 2 - Homemade popcicles with the following juices (NONE are from concentrate, but still don't know if legal): RW Knudsen Organic Pear Juice, RW Knudsen Organic Apple Juice, Lakewood Organic Pure Concord Grape Juice, Indian Summer Apple Cider. I also have (but have not used yet) Lakewood Organic Pure Cranberry Juice. Does anyone know of other legal brand names of juices? Is there a white grape juice that is legal? We prefer organic, where possible. 3 - Homemade Jello (Knox Unflavored Gelatin, with juices from above). However, he won't eat the jello...doesn't like the texture! 4 - Homemade Chicken Soup w/carrots, made just like the website requires. He won't eat this either though! Tried making the chicken pancakes w/out eggs..about 7 different times..HORRIBLE! I need some more recipes to get throught these first five days, so if anyone has any creative ideas, I would really appreciate it!!!!! There is onion in the chicken soup. Use a little garlic if it helps him eat meat. Legal bottled juices are the Just Juice line from Knudson ( not their other juices) but all but grape are started after the intro id diaharrea is gone. . Welch's Grape from concentrate in bottles or plastic jugs is legal. So is Tropicana O.J. in the carton but no boxed tetra pack juices. Dole pineapplke juice is legal. Dilute all juices with water. If you have the BTVC book and study the two websites carefully I think you will find there is going to be a lot to eat, even egg free. Carol F. Guest guest
The juices that I told you are not legal are never going to be OK...for the intro or later on. Salt and pepper are fine for the intro. Technically, garlic isn't, but a moderater can better advise you about what you might be able to do about that. , do you think you could give some meal ideas? I think you guys are pretty much dairy and egg free, aren't you? You might be a good source of initial ideas for . Meleah Re: Day 2 of Intro.....Questions on LEGAL Items! HELP! Guest guest
Thanks so much!!!!! I just checked out the RW Knudsen website and looked at the " Just Juice " line. It seems that the Blueberry, Cranberry, and Tart Cherry are all made from concentrate though...are they still legal??? The others, like the Grape, were not. Is the " Pure " line ok from the Lakewood Organics juices? I thought I had read somewhere that they were.... No, the Apple Cider was NOT refrigerated, so I will discard that one (it was REALLY awful anyway!) I will get the refrig type, and the Welch's juice (supermarket for that....we never go there anymore..just WHole Foods for our one-stop shopping!!!) He can't have OJ...very allergic to oranges. I also read somewhere that oranges are really bad for blocking detoxification? Anyway, I am planning to have the whole family do the diet soon, so I am doing a " house dump " of all the things we can't have. I have yeast issues, and my dh has bowel issues that I would personally love to handle! LOL. ;-) Hmmm, no frying? I could try broiling I guess w/out the sunflower oil. He does LOVE the garlic, so any insight there would be great. So only Grape and Apple Cider for the intro? And only two days, not five???? Why have I seen five days? WHat's the difference, and what should I do? Any other suggestions are sooooooo welcome.....I don't know how I could do this diet without your help!!!! ;-) Thanks again - > > , > The Knudsen juices that you've been using are illegal. Guest guest
The Just Juices line is legal even though it may say that it is from concentrate. I don't know why. I just know that it is. I'm not sure about the Lakewood Organics juice. I've not heard of it before. The Welch's white grape in the bottle will also say from concentrate. It is OK. Yes, dump the apple cider. Get the kind in the refrigerated section, and make sure that it is just apples...nothing else. Yes, just broil or grill instead of the pan frying for the intro. If Carol says that a little garlic will be OK, then go ahead. She's an scd veteran, and knows her stuff. I'd mince the fresh garlic very fine, or make your own garlic powder. Do you have a food dehydrater? If so, you can easily dry garlic cloves, and grind them into garlic powder. Don't use store bought. They add starches to it to prevent caking. Be prepared that your entire house will smell like garlic for days if you dry your own. We don't have a dehydrater, so my mom made garlic powder for us a few months back. It was so strong that she moved the dehydrater to her front porch for several days while it was drying. The number of days on the intro really depends on the symptoms. Two days is a minimum, and five days is the max. It depends on when the diahrea subsides. If it still hasn't subsided after the five days, then go ahead and move on to new foods, but move very slowly. Choose foods that are very easily digested when you begin to bring in new foods after intro(green beans, zucchini, spinach). Have you looked at the stages list under food preparation at pecanbread.com? This will be helpful for you, I think. I think it's good to have the whole family go scd. We cleaned all of the junk out of the house when iel went scd in May. We all eat scd at home, but the rest of the family does eat regular when we're at someone else's home. Mainly, because I don't want to hastle with taking food for five people everywhere we go. Anyway, let us know if you need more help. Meleah Day 2 of Intro.....Questions on LEGAL Items! Guest guest
, I'm going back to your earlier post from today.... even though it's been answered by a couple of people. Here's the hardest part: If you're been using all these illegal juices..... AND still using the Nystatin with sugar.... then you weren't really doing intro. I think you've probably figured that out by now. I think THE most crucial decision you have to make right now is about the Nystatin. If you're really going to go ahead and do " intro proper " , this is going to spoil the whole effort. I would stop using it, if you can't use the plain. I think if you don't, you might as well not try to tackle the intro diet. Of course, I do think your son would be better off eating all legal SCD foods than simply going back to all the grains and sugars from before.... but, you just need to know that this one thing WILL undermine everything. I don't want to see you go to all this hard work for naught. I'm really not sure where you got the idea that those juices were even legal AFTER intro. Did someone tell you they were legal? Well... anyway... I think you're straight on the juices now. There is a legal organic grape juice... the Kedem kosher brand. I didn't see that one mentioned. I don't know if they have a white grape version. So... what to do now? The true " SCD Intro " diet is very specifically laid out in the book.... and all kinds of variation from that is not really intro. But, does one really have to do intro? Basically, you will get the best shot at success on the diet if you do it. The book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle says: " At the beginning of the program, when symptoms such as diarrhea and cramping are severe, the following basic diet should be followed for about five days. In other cases, one or two days on this basic diet is sufficient. " If your child won't eat the intro chicken soup, then there are some *small* variations on intro that are listed on the www.pecanbread.com site under " Food Preparation " .... scroll down to " ASD Intro Diet " . Of course, you'll just leave out the egg ideas. If there is not some combination of those foods that you think you can stick with for him for just a few days, then you might need to just move forward.... stick with all legal foods, at the beginning stages (see chart under " Food Preparation " section of the website).... all peeled and cooked. SIMPLIFY everything as much as you can by pulling out the supplements that I suggested in the other e-mail.... just for now. I would not try to re-intro his supps until you get the diarrhea stopped.... then do them ONE at a TIME, so you know he's tolerating them. Broil, or boil, bake or slow-cook instead of frying his meat for now..... because that will make it easier to digest. That's what you're going for right now. You can use the garlic if you must.... but I would suggest roasted garlic, mushed up and mixed in or spread over. must go for now... Guest guest
Hi , << Thanks so much!!!!! I just checked out the RW Knudsen website and > looked at the " Just Juice " line. It seems that the Blueberry, > Cranberry, and Tart Cherry are all made from concentrate though...are > they still legal??? The others, like the Grape, were not.>> The only types of juices for the intro diet are grape juice or apple cider. They can be commercial or homemade and should be diluted: at least half of it should be water. Even though some of the Knudsen's Just juice are made from concentrate they are okay. Elaine discussed it with the Knudsen company. *But* none of the other Knudsen juices are SCD legal. Here's a list of legal commercial juices: -Tropicana Pure premium OJ -Dole pineapple juice -Heinz and 's Tomato juice -The Knudsen's *Just Juice* line (not the rest of their products): Just Black Cherry Just Blueberry Just Cranberry Just Pomegranate Organic Just Concord Grape Organic Just Tart Cherry -Kedeem grape juice -Welch's 100% Grape juice (Red, Purple and white) << Is the " Pure " line ok from the Lakewood Organics juices?>> No. << Hmmm, no frying? I could try broiling I guess w/out the sunflower > oil. He does LOVE the garlic, so any insight there would be great.>> The garlic has antimicrobial properties (which may increase die off) and is fibrous and is a more advanced food. Depending on his stools he may not be digesting it all. If you can do the intro for two days without it all the better. But, if the only way he will eat for those two days is to have garlic than use it - it is more important to get started on the diet. <<...for the intro?... And only two days, not > five???? Why have I seen five days? WHat's the difference, and what should I do? >> The intro should be done for 2-5 days. 4-5 days for diarrhea and 2-3 days for everything else. If he is only having 1-2 bowel movements per day than 2 days on the intro should be fine.
