Sorry to bother all you " oldtimers " with another question, but 17 Down

Syndrome/Autism

SCD 3 yrs is still suspected of having malabsorbtion. The upper Gi with 16 oz of

barium and 5.5 hours of xrays (LOTS of fun!!!) showed nothing at all. Now they

want to do an endoscopy and colonoscopy to find out where she's bleeding. This

would require hospitalization and an ng tube to clean her out first blah blah

blah. They suspect bleeding only because she is anemic. She is also

vitD.calcium, B12, iron, and protein deficient and we've suspected malabsorbtion

forever. The nurse said that the treatment for malabsorbtion would be pancreatic

enzymes.. I'm thinking I would like to start her back on enzymes just for the

heck of it before we go thru all this additional trauma.

My question (and there is a question:-) is this....of all the enzymes that are

on the legal list which I have checked, can any of you recommend a particularly

mild one that has worked well for you? We're not worried about phenols, casein,

or gluten. Somewhere I read about someone suffering a ripped up stomach from

protease and that of course is something I'd like to avoid. We used to give her

a very mild enzyme years ago but it is not SCD legal.

Any and all help appreciated greatly!!!

Sherry

if you can cc me at gldcst@... I'd love it as I'm on digest and want to

move ahead with this asap.

Hi Sherry... nice to hear from you.

I think the Houston enzymes are considered the best, and they are SCD legal.

You could call or write and ask for a call back from Dr. Houston himself, about

your particular situation. I've heard that he is really good about doing that.

I'm sure he would probably suggest starting with a very small amount and

increasing slowly, as tolerated, but it would be best to talk with him and

describe her condition/history.

As far as enzymes doing damage, I think there is some concern about the

proteases, if someone already has a lot of open ulcerations.... but I am not an

enzyme expert and would not pretend to be.

I'd recommend contacting Houston Nutraceuticals via their website:

my best to you both....
