Guest guest
Hey ! It's me mom of the twins, Garrett and . How are you? Yes, you can make yogurt with milk and and commercial yogurt as a starter. That recipe is fine. But you would want to make sure the yogurt you used as a starter did not have Bifidus and that the milk you used did not have Carageenen or Polysorbate 80. It is best to use organic in this case. But, it would be better to use the goat milk. I buy Meyenburg from Wal Mart or Publix. Some say their children do not like it. Mine do not have any problems with that brand and it is easy to find around here. I also use progurt from giprohealth. Hope this helps. I am in the middle of making yogurt and I went to Elaines website to do a little reading and I came across the yogurt recipe. The recipe on the website talks about using GOAT MILK and PROGURT starter. The recipe in the book says you can use REGULAR MILK and PLAIN, UNSWEETENED YOGURT. I am in the middle of using the recipe from the book. Is that recipe no longer used??? Should I be using goat milk and progurt instead??? I found the Progurt online but I have no idea where in the world I can find Goat Milk. I messed up my first batch of yogurt this afternoon and I was so proud of myself when I got this batch right ~~~ now I'm wandering if this batch is completely wrong too :-( Boy, I'm just having a week full of obstacles.....but I would have never made it through without all of you! I have no problem starting over, I just don't want to give her yogurt that is no good. Guest guest
, For the kids with autism who have been casein free prior to starting SCD, we strongly recommend goat milk yogurt. This is pretty clear (I hope!) on the www.pecanbread.com website. The book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle, was not originally written for use with kids on the autism spectrum, although there is a chapter on autism in the newest edition. I think it directs parents to go read the pecanbread website. Well.... anyway.... IF she was casein free, you'll want to introduce the yogurt made with goat milk. Goat milk yogurt is sort of the standard around here, and the ProGurt starter is popular because it contains no trace of cow dairy in it's production. But if your child was already using cow dairy products before SCD without any problems, you could use cow milk to make your yogurt. My daughter tolerates cow dairy, so that's what I use. HOWEVER.... plain unsweetened yogurt for starter is not as readily available as it once was when she wrote the book. Most plain yogurts these days have added bacterial strains that are NOT legal, unfortunately. The four allowed strains that your starter yogurt can have are: l.acidophilus, s. thermophilus, l.bulgaricus & l.casei. No bifidus strains are legal at all..... and many commercial yogurts have gone to adding those. Your plain starter yogurt cannot have any added starches or thickeners.... no " carrageenan " or added milk solids. What brand name are you trying to use? I use the Yogourmet yogurt starter from Lyosan.... as I have not been able to find ANY legal plain yogurt to use as starter. Yogourmet has a bit of cow dairy in it, which is why goat yogurt families tend to avoid it. Patti Newbie making yogurt...Need help!! Hi guys, It's me again! Guest guest
Patti, I just read your message about waiting to start the yogurt....Maybe it's a good thing that I messed this batch up :-) I will hold off for a bit then, but if anyone could let me know if I should be using goat milk instead of cow milk, I would appreciate it. I would like to order the Progurt if I need it also. Guest guest
<<Just curious, do you use their regular starter or the probiotic one? Christa>> Only their regular one is legal on SCD.... the one that contains only l.acidophilus, s.thermophilus and l.bulgaricus. Guest guest
Hi , > I am in the middle of making yogurt and I went to Elaines website to > do a little reading and I came across the yogurt recipe. > > The recipe on the website talks about using GOAT MILK and PROGURT > starter. The recipe in the book says you can use REGULAR MILK and > PLAIN, UNSWEETENED YOGURT. Both recipes are correct. Some who are sensitive to cow milk can use the easier to digest goat's milk. People have also used reindeer milk, sheep's milk and at least one other that I can't think of at the moment. For yogurt starter you can use SCD legal commercial starters or a good non dairy starter. You can find these at http://pecanbread.com/goatyogurt.html#start (non dairy) http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/beginners_guide/yoghurt/yog_st arters.htm (regular SCD legal yogurt starters) > I am in the middle of using the recipe from the book. To find goat's milk use this link: http://pecanbread.com/goatyogurt.html#milk to go to http://www.realmilk.com/where2.html > I messed up my first batch of yogurt this afternoon and I was so > proud of myself when I got this batch right ~~~ now I'm wandering if > this batch is completely wrong too :-( The second batch is probably fine but if you used cow dairy you may want to hold off on using that for your daughter. She may be sensitive (at least for now) to the cow dairy. When you start yogurt for her you may have better luck using the goat yogurt since it is easier to digest. You could eat this batch of yogurt instead of tossing it. Or drip it and make a thick yogurt cheese. > Boy, I'm just having a week full of obstacles.....but I would have > never made it through without all of you! > > I have no problem starting over, I just don't want to give her > yogurt that is no good.
