I have been repositioning my son since he was 9 weeks old because I saw the back of his head getting really flat. He is now 5 months old and it does look a lot better, however it doesn't look quite normal to me. There are some bumps or bulges above his ears that really stick out (in my opinion) and makes his head look quite square. To me, this is worse than the flatness in the back. I took my son to Hanger today for a free evaluation. His CI was 88 percent - how bad is that? I was told that he doesn't look bad at all and that whatever I am doing is working. I don't think the orthotist was very experienced, he has only been doing this for three years. He said he didn't think the helmet would help with the bulges. My pediatrician (I just switched from a really horrible one and don't have much of a choice to switch again) also thinks his head looks normal. In her words, she thought the bumps were just how his head shape was. To make things more difficult, my son only has medicaid and it can take 4-6 wks to approve a helmet if he needs one but no one seems to believe he needs one. If necessary, I am willing to pay for it out of pocket (Hanger told me $1500). I am just so conflicted about the whole thing and I don't know what to do. I am considering having an evaluation done at Plattner's in Peoria, IL (they have the STARband there but it's a $75 eval fee and $3300 for a helmet). I just don't want to put it off any longer and just want some advice and some opinions.
