Guest guest
Thank you Carol for your guidance. You said: " So please, Antoinette read over your message, pretending that you are brand new and regard it from the perspective of someone who is just starting SCD and you will continue to be a really big help I am sure. " Will do. I totaly understand. You also said: " Also be aware that when a food has been restricted by Elaine, there are instances when we do not know the reason. In certain cases Elaine herself was unsure and just decided caution should rule. " I have something to ask: Recently our DAN! suggested that Kiki take melatonin since she has troubles sleeping. I am still trying to figure out why melatonin is legal on Pecan Breads list...and not on Elaine's. No one replied to our confusion. But since I trust Elaine.....we are not going to use it now....this I can tell you. I know that many ASD kids take the stuff. Something that many of us should raise our eye brows about. Can you or anyone tell me why????? Thank you. Antoinette (SCD 2/06)
Guest guest
I am not sure Elaine said anything one way or the other about melatonin. This may have been one of those things that she just admitted to not knowing anything about..... the substance itself. It is a brain hormone, and that *may* have made her uneasy in terms of supplementing it.... that's quite a bit different than just a vitamin or a mineral. It could be that she basically said she didn't understand enough about it to say..... except to make sure no illegal starches or fillers were included in it. But, not everything made it to inclusion on her website, the legal/illegal list or Knowledge Base. It may be similar to her uneasiness about some other things... take stevia for example. Because of it's similarity (at the molecular level) to a steroid compound, she was very wary of what stevia would do in the gut.... over the long term. Therefore, it is illegal..... but only because of, in Elaine's opinion, a lack of information and research. This sort of thing just made her uncomfortable.... and she honestly did not have time to research so many new things that parents wanted to use.
