Examining Challenges and Successes of Reaching Out to Male Farmworkers May 6, 2010 at 11am PST While most of the farmworkers in the U.S. are male, adult males comprise of only 25% of migrant and seasonal farmworkers seen by migrant health centers (UDS 2008). Male farmworkers appear to seek medical care less frequently for a variety of reasons, including difficulty taking time off of work, lack of assistance programs available for men, and a lack of knowledge about the health care system. Given the physically-demanding nature of agricultural work, male farmworkers need accessible medical and social services to maintain their health and wellbeing. Outreach programs across the nation are taking creative steps to reach out to this underserved population. During this call, panelists highlight their unique approaches for reaching out to male farmworkers.
