Hi,

I am Alec's mom. Alec 11.5 month old and is wearing STARband since early August. At the beginning the band rubbed pressured points and created blisters in a few places. We

were sing band aids to cover red spots to prevent further skin irritation. We also were going for band adjustments every 2 weeks. And after about 3 adjustments we finally got it right.

As far as people staring. Who cares what they think? People always stare at think they have not seen much before. I made a mental decision that I would not allow myself

to be bothered by other people staring. I actually look at my son's band as a sign of my personal achievement, I paid for it $3,000 out of pocket and I am proud that I was able to afford it :) Also I think your anxiety level is so high right now because

you are still early in the process. After some time passes by and you get your scan and see improved results, I think then it would be easier.

Thought I'd chime in as when you search for danmar helmets you are going to find a LOT of negative information.  You can rest easy that 99% of that is all geared towards their one size fits all version and NOT the custom.  The other little bit out there, well every helmet brand gave someone a less than satisfactory experience, ya know?  Everyone I've met while going through this had a good  experience.

We're in MI and used danmar through DMC Children's.  We had a very positive experience with both the surgeon and the ortho, and got excellent results.  Our daughter's case is complicated and atypical.  She started the band with a difference of about 2 inches at 4 1/2 months.  Two helmets and a little over 8 months later she's only off by 1 or 2 mm depending on the check up and who takes the measurements.  It's not perfect but it's within the realm of normal and there's nothing I would have done differently.  Hang in there because in a few months you'll be done!

As for the staring, I either ignored it or used the opportunity to educate people about plagio.  I think the best is when someone else that has gone through it and came out the other side offers encouragement.  When ever I see a baby in a helmet, I do my best to say a couple kind words in a keep your chin up and know you made the right decision kind of way.  If I have Elly with me I show off her now round head too~

Hopefully the red marks will be resolved soon.  It's not uncommon to have various angry red areas in the beginning.  Partly because it can take a couple adjustments to get the fit fine tuned, and partly because they are growing so fast what worked last week may be applying too much pressure this week.  Heat rash is also common.  Have the ortho and maybe even the pedi check it out if your concerned.  We were instructed to use Aquaphore, cortisone cream and a triple antibiotic for various rashes that popped up while Elly was in the helmet.  None of them were long lived and none seemed to bother her all that much either.
