Guest guest
, I looked at your son's pictures and unfortunately I don't have much to offer except that your son's pictures look just like my daughter's and cranial tech advised me not to pursue the helmet and I have always had second thoughts. She is now 12 months old and her head shape is very mild but her facial asymmetry is still off somewhat (one eye sits higher and one ear sits lower). I keep going back and forth with if the helmet would help with any of these asymmetries. Why did you decide to pursue the helmet for your son, was just due to the head shape? Also we tried the CST for months and I don't think it helped much. Is it helping you?? Guest guest
Hi Annette, Just so you are prepared, if you do decide to band... 's scan shows more asymmetry and CT has now refused to band him. It is not much more, but definitely more in the back. They told my husband that the deciding factor was 's head shape. I'm very skeptical. Have you tried chiro or osteopathy? Good luck, Kathy, mom to 16 months, 4 months in Starband annettemarek wrote: , I looked at your son's pictures and unfortunately I don't have much to offer except that your son's pictures look just like my daughter's and cranial tech advised me not to pursue the helmet and I have always had second thoughts. Guest guest
Annette, I decided to insist for the band after finding this group and seeing that the helmet can sometimes help even older babies. His headshape was bothering me too much, nobody else not my husband or anybody who saw him. I didn't really see much of a facial asymmetry, do you see any? Everytime I looked at him from the top I'd get an instantaenous fit of rage and really really negative, and I mean worse, close to homicidal feelings for my ped. I'd asked about his headshape since he came home from the hospital and I was always told the usual, not even a name for it, no repo suggestions just tummy time. I needed to try and do what I could about it since I had done absolutely nothing about it before. I decided I would try and talk the specialist into prescribing one. She did. So far I'm feeling better about it because I think I'm trying to do all I can. If I can get even tiny bit of improvement from the helmet or CST I'm all for it. The anger and the guilt about not trying would definetly consume me and I'm good at that. I don't know if CST is helping, we just started in Sep. I'm still skeptical especially when the therapist starts talking about the possibility of overcorrecting??!! or of trying to relive the birth, it was a C-section, when to me he's just done and trying to wiiggle his way out. She's just so sure CST can give dramatic changes, had I met her before the helmet she for sure would have advised against it. I have to say I can't see a difference right after he has one chiro or CSt but I could tell in the last couple weeks that he looked better. So was it the helmet or CST or both? Who knows. The OT I just met last week is positive it wasn't the CST, that it's the helmet and that his best shot is still the helmet at his age.So I'm still trying to understand the CST thing, everyday I have more questions about it.I don't know if CT would have agreed to band, I really would have gone there for an eval but Miami is just too far for me and I felt time was of the essence so we went for the starband. The ortho said we had to commit to AT LEAST 6 mos. Can I ask you why Ct advised against the helmet for your daughter? Possibly making it worse like they told Kathy, if I'm correct or because it just wouldn't be worth the trouble for the tiny improvement you'd maybe get out of it? That's what the specialist tried to tell me. That we probably wouldn't get any improvement or tiny just not worth it to her, considering age and mild plagio. She felt that since it was only cosmetic he could just leave his hair longer when older(!!) and that we would maybe get some improvement anyway just with time. Also his flat spot is pretty much in the middle back. So She probably just agreed because she thought she was helping me not lose my mind over it. Who cares. , Tampa, FL, 21 mo(18 adj), mild plagio, starband for almost 3 mos+ chiro and cst Plagiocephaly From: annettemarek@...Date: Thu, 8 Oct 2009 13:40:24 +0000Subject: Re: helmet or cst? ,I looked at your son's pictures and unfortunately I don't have much to offer except that your son's pictures look just like my daughter's and cranial tech advised me not to pursue the helmet and I have always had second thoughts. Guest guest
, No I don't see any facial asymmetry in your son, I just wondered if perhaps he had some prior and this was one of the reason you pursued the helmet. CT did not want to band my daughter because she is very mild and they felt that the gain would be very minor. They told me that they graduate children with my daughter's head shape. The flat area has rounded out a bit on it's own in the past couple of months. I really do not care that much about the flatness, I am more concerned about the fact that her face appears asymmetrical to me. Her cheek is not as full on the one side, her jaw seems tilted and her eye sits slightly higher. I keep thinking that maybe the band would have helped with this but I have read on this group in older posts by some that the facial asymmetries don't always correct with the helmet. So at this point, I don't know what to do. I guess I could try to pursue cST again but we tried that already and I don't think it helped. I guess I am kind of hoping that the asymmetries resolve as her face grows. Her head shape is really mild and she barely has any flatness but she still has a slight parallelogram shape which is what I think is causing the asymmetries in her face. MY daughter is almost 12 months and I would push for the help but I can't figure out if it will help with the facial asymmetry. Good luck with your son. Guest guest
Annette, If you aren't going to do a band, but would like ideas about additional things to try, check out the olderplag list. I find that there are moms on that list who know about other treatments because their kids are too old for helmets. We recently started going to a chiropractor because of the recommendations on that list. In our case, stands to benefit from the chiropractor with her digestive issues and well as her head so it was a relatively easy decision for us. It was a hard sell to the pediatirican, who swore that chiropractic was not good for kids, but she finally agreed to write the referral. Having had evaluated, I see that her areas of misalignment are related to the head and her digestive system. So, we are pursuing treatment there. The key is to find someone who works well with kids. We used this site to find ours. http://icpa4kids.com/index.php We also did CST previously and are trying this again. Did you do home exercises? Our therapist says that the home exercises are the key to improvement because they ensure that we are releasing her sutures on a daily basis, but I know that there are others who aren't given any to do. Guest guest
Hi Annette, Have you tried a chiropractor or osteopath? I cannot say yet whether they help with facial asymmetries. My understanding is an osteopath can work on things so that future growth is more likely to be where you want it. My husband has been talking with the osteopath and our ortho. My husband is of the conclusion that as 's grows some of the facial asymmetries may even out and as he gets bigger they shouldn't be as visible, especially if we keep up with treatment. Hope this is true. 's facial asymmetries are now very mild, and most I wouldn't have seen if CT didn't point them out. Good luck! MY daughter is almost 12 months and I would push for the help but I can't figure out if it will help with the facial asymmetry. Good luck with your son. Guest guest
Annette, I never noticed any facial asymmetries on even when little so if they were there they were not enough for me to notice. The plagio was the problem for me. I was also told, by the craniofacial surgeon and the starband ortho, the improvement would be minor if any and that his starting numbers are often graduating numbers. Still minor improvement is better than none for me and at least I feel better knowing I tried. Maybe somebody else can chime in about the possibility of improvement on the facial asymmetries. I would think that if the headshape improved even a tiny bit then the face would be affected too. The little improvement had so far I can notice. Did you see a specialist too and had a prescription for the helmet or did you just go for the eval at CT? If you wanted to pursue the helmet would you have to try elsewhere? , Tampa, FL , 21 mo (18 adj), mild plagio, starband for almost 3 mos Plagiocephaly From: annettemarek@...Date: Fri, 9 Oct 2009 00:50:10 +0000Subject: Re: helmet or cst? ,No I don't see any facial asymmetry in your son, I just wondered if perhaps he had some prior and this was one of the reason you pursued the helmet. Guest guest
Hi, 's chiropractor does cranial adjustments. That is how it helps his abnormal head shape. The first chiro I took to said he was not qualified to adjust the head, and then he referred me to this wonderful lady with training in pediatric chiro care. So, not all chiros adjust the head. If you are already seeing an osteropath, I'm not sure a chiro will help the head any more. My understanding is the osteopathy is more intense, but I cannot say this from experience yet. just started with an osteopath, but my husband took him the first visit. -Kathy annettemarek wrote: and others, Thanks for the suggestions, I will definitely join the older plagio group. I'm just curious how chiropractors work on plagio. I could see them helping with torticollis since having a limited range of motion can be related to the spine abnormalities but I guess I don't understand how an abnormal head shape can be corrected by making adjustments to your spine. I guess I could see it as preventative measure but not once the child already has plagio. We also tried CST and the osteopath gave us exercises but the exercises assured that her body stayed midline and remained stretched between treatments. I'm not sure if there are others exercises? I might go back to the osteopath and raise my concerns again. Thanks, Annette (daughter, mild plagio)
