Guest guest
Dear Group: Help! I will be 5 weeks post-op tomorrow. As of last Monday, I have lost only 16 pounds - AND I had the 8-foot bypass. I am so disappointed in the numbers. I am trying not to let it get me down, but I had really counted on losing the average 30 pounds the first month. My BMI was 55! I am pleased to note that my blood sugar is now almost normal after having been a type II diabetic for several years. I was on five different meds for diabetes before surgery and now take nothing. That in itself is reason to be happy and thankful to Dr. R. for the surgery. But can anyone hazard a guess as to why I have lost so little weight? Could I just be eating too much? That is all that makes sense to me. I avoid sugar and alot of fat - and eat virtually no meat - just beans, other vegetables, nonfat yogurt, some fruit, pasta, salad, and soups (not creamed ones). Believe it or not, I was not a really big eater before surgery, but did have quite a sweet tooth, which means that I also ate alot of fat in search of sugar in desserts. I have had no reflux, no complications, and have vomited only twice. I would still choose this surgery. Even with only a 16 pound weight loss, without the surgery, I would already be on my way to regaining it. Okay, so I am not exercising regularly like I was before surgery. But others have stated that they lost 30 pounds the first month without exercising either. By the way, I just located my YMCA card, so I will begin tomorrow. But what gives? Is it my 44 years of age? Anyone have any ideas? Sherry in NC
