ISLET REGENERATION: PROTEIN PATHWAY TO A CURE?

Tuesday, April 27th from 9 PM U.S. East Coast Time

Faustman, MD, PhD

Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School

Director of the MGH Immunobiology Laboratory

Dr. Faustman has been an independent investigator at the Massachusetts

General Hospital and Harvard Medical School since 1987. She spent the last

decade researching the nature of the molecular defect in T-cells that results in

the development of autoimmunity. This work led her to discover a way to treat

diabetic mice that resulted in the permanent reversal of established diabetes.

" We have found that it is possible to rapidly re-grow islets from adult

precursor cells, something that many thought could not be done, " says

Faustman. " By accomplishing effective, robust and durable islet regeneration,

this discovery opens up an entirely new approach to diabetes treatment. " Dr.

Faustman's work with mice in the laboratory -- and if and how it might be

transferred into a cure for humans -- will be the topic of this special program

ANOTHER SPECIAL PROGRAMS COMING IN APRIL .

TRIAL PROFILE: IMPLANTABLE INSULIN PUMPS

Thursday, April 29th at 9 PM U.S. East Coast Time

Lori Hahn, Implantable Pump & Long-Term Sensor Wearer

And Dr. Rikalo, Sansum Diabetes Research Institute

Lori Hahn was the first participant in an investigative clinical trial testing

Medtronic MinMed's newest technology of an implantable insulin pump and

long-term glucose sensor. Lori is just a step or two away from having an

artificial pancreas, which she'll have when she receives an upgrade allowing her

sensor and pump to work together in a fully automated way, providing the correct

amount of insulin as it's required.

Dr. Rikalo is the Director of the Clinical Research Department of the

Sansum Diabetes Research Institute in Santa Barbara, California and Lori's

physician in the clinical trial. Both Lori and Dr. Rikalo will talk about the

pathway to a mechanical pancreas, how this new technology works and what it

means for people with diabetes.
