Hi Todd,

Welcome to the list. You will find many of the answers you're looking for on

the www.pecanbread.com website. Look under " Food Preparation " for tips on

introducing the diet to children.... with " kid friendly " intro diet foods.

There is a section called " Overcoming Difficulties " which has information on

dealing with picky eaters. Believe me, MANY kids come to SCD as picky eaters....

and most end up expanding their tastes as time goes by. The " Recipes " section

contains many kid-friendly SCD foods.

Starting a 3 year old on SCD

I am the father of Ben, who will turn 3 in January. I have Crohn's

disease and have been on the SCD for 6 months with great results.

Ben has not yet been diagnosed, but exhibits some symptoms of high

functioning ASD. My wife and I are preparing to start Ben on the

SCD within the next few weeks and are looking for some advice on how

to implement the diet for him. He is a very picky eater with a very

limited diet. He eats no meat except commercial chicken nuggets.

He eats virtually no vegetables. He does eat some fruit (apples,

raisins, bananas), nuts, and seeds. He has not exhibited any

obvious GI problems, but based on my experience and history, we feel

that the SCD might be the solution for Ben.

Our questions are as follows.

- What is the recommended approach for young children - cold turkey

or gradual introduction?

- Are there any suggestions for kid-friendly comfort foods that are

legal and can become a new staple in the diet?

- Are there any suggested web sites with recipes for young children?

- Ben is still breast feeding. I assume this is legal on the diet

and encouraged, correct?

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks

Todd

Todd,

If Ben is breastfeeding, then his mom will need to go on the diet as well.

Otherwise, she would be feeding the problem that you're hoping to resolve. To

replace his commercial chicken nuggets, you can try the recently posted chicken

nugget recipe that has been a huge hit with a lot of the kids. Search the files

for details, but it is basicly homjemade mayo(recipe found at pecanbread.com),

and pureed, cooked chicken(use the food processer). Combine the two, season

with salt and pepper, and bake at 350 for about 35 minutes. As Patty said, a

lot of your other questions can be answered by reading through the food

preparation section at pecanbread.com.
