Not true, my son only wore 1 and he started at borderline severe,

already 9 month old and ended in the normal range after only 1 docband

Good to know.  My son started treatment at 9 months with moderate plagio.  I don't expect a perfect head - who's head is perfect - but I do want his ears to be in the same place and his head to look reasonably normal if he ever had a buzz cut.

If one had unlimited money and a pro-helmet doctor, willing to tackle

the problem at five months of age, one could conceivably get two

STARbands between 6 and 18 months, then two DOC Bands between 18

months and 1 year! Maybe a wealthy sponsor could mold such a

champion...

Seriously, though, if you end up needing that second DOC Band, it

looks like someone has to pay twice, and it costs twice as much as

STARband already (ours cost ~$1700, anyway). I wouldn't lean too

hard on that 15 or 20% statistic, therefore: cost prohibition may be

a factor.

Well, I don't think I'd ever give my son a buzz. Ct did not recommend

a 2nd band by looks and then that was verified by measurement when he

measured in the normal range at 4, 5 and 6 mm assymetry after 3 month

in the band. He started at 15, 15 and 17 and they only estimated they

could get him to an 8 so he even did better than they thought. But I

was worried when he finished b/c it was still somewhat noticable to me

and dh. Though noone else could see it at all, his doctor even said

his head looked great. But he still had a tad flat in back and a tad

ear assymetry. However I guess it was no longer that noticable b/c he

no longer had 1 ear pushed in on the flat side and a bulge behind the

other pushing it out. His forehead bossing was completely gone as

well as the tiny bit of eye assymetry he had. He was 1 when he

finished and in 3 wks he turns 3 and will be exactly 2 years post

band. He has grown hair since then lol and had his 1st haircut 1 year

ago on his 2nd bday. Before or after haircut I no longer see it but

bet I could if I went specifically looking for it. I have even

clippered his head and not noticed. But I don't think I would ever

attempt a buzz still. I have before and after pics in the before and

after docband folder. I also have them at

Having been reading these posts for about a year, I can say this: While most do not need a second DOC band, I have read about many more who have had two DOCbands than who have needed two STARbands. Off hand, I can't actually remember any posts about two STARbands, but I'm sure a search would find a couple. As stated previously, it just has to do with the thickness of the foam and the 16 week time limit that CT uses. For most babies, this is enough, but there are some who are older or severe enough that it isn't.

So, if everything else is equal and you know for sure that you can't afford a second band, then you might want to go ahead with the STARband. Just be sure to check out the qualifications and success rate of the place you are going to.

I just want to add one thing. While it's true that the Starband could last for

6 months, it doesn't always. Our son outgrew his in 3. I saw for myself that

there was no more foam to shave at the back (where he needed growth). Maybe

it's not common, but it can happen. But the bottom line is really the second

paragraph of 's below.

Our starband was $3000 when we got it 3 yrs ago, and I'm sure the cost has gone

up. Luckily our insurance paid. The ortho decides how much to charge for the

starband. With the docband the offices are centrally run, so the pricing is the

same. Starband ortho prices generally vary according to how expensive the area

is. We were in the san francisco bay area, so costs are high.
