My 22 mos ASD Son is on day two of SCD, but has been GF/CF/SF for

40days. I know it's t0o soon to start analyzing him but I am interested

in hearing stories about young children's initial reactions to the

diet, particularly ASD children. While I did not notice any of his

usual stims this morning, hand flapping and paceing, he is sooo tired

right now. He slept from 7pm to 10am this morning (his usual is 9pm-

7am) and I had to wake him up, then he fell asleep again at 11:30 and

is still asleep right now 1:20. No other unusual symptoms beside being

tired. i.e. running nose, belly ache etc. Did anyone experience

anything similar???

Thanks

,

Almost everyone has experienced something similar at the start of the diet. The

good and bad bacteria are fighting for supremacy in your son's body and this

can be

manifest itself as fatigue or flu like symptoms.

We call this pehenonenom, " Die Off, " It can be very stressful for concerned

parents at the

start. Once things stabilize, hopefully you will begin to see progress. There is

sometimes a

regression in the intial months usually at the third month. Don't be alarmed.

SCD

requires patience and strict adherance to be effective.

I'd say that he's experiencing die off of the bad bacteria. His body just

needs the extra rest to deal with it. My son was just under 3yrs. when we

started scd on May 1st. I never have seen dramatic changes all at once, but

have seen gradual improvement. I definitely encourage you to keep a journal

from the start. Many people keep a food journal...which is great...but I

think that it is also very helpful to keep a journal with general info like

behavior, mood, ect. I'd do it every day at least in the beginning months.

It will not only help you to see his progress over time, and encourage you

on the rough days, but it will be very helpful for any health care

professionals that he sees.
