Guest guest
Dear Cindy, I lost about 50 pounds on the atkins diet (although after I went off of it after 8 months and slowly regained the weight back over 3 years) and it taught me a lot about my body. one, a diet that emphasizes carbs and low fat, even healthy carbs like fresh fruit and bread, only exacerbates my insulin resistance and causes major mood swings and energy fluctuations. A higher percentage of good carbs in my diet makes my face break out, constipates me, makes me bloat ( i don't need to have a bypass to have 'dumping' because a glass of apple juice will do it to me now),stops my periods, and all around just makes me feel bad. (i have symptoms of PCOS) If i restrict my fats to very low, my skin gets dry and and i begin to have a menses cycle that never ends with copious bright red blood and terrible anemia. (Found that out when I was on Medi-fast). I found if I keep my carbohydrate intake around 30-40gms a day (which is about three to four cups of non starchy veggies) is best for me and I no longer feel guilty for my meat cravings. I used to feel bad that my natural inclination is to eat only the meat and leave everything else behind. I used to eat the carbos cause they were " good for me " and oh, sure they tasted good. If I had to choose between chocolate cake and ice cream and a rib eye steak...if I listen to my body it would choose the ribeye although the pleasure in the moment would be with the dessert knowing I would probably fall into a 'sugar coma' in about 2 hours. this dessert would make me bloated and flatulent hehehe So knowing this about my body I still chose to have surgery, knowing it will be a powerful tool to assist me because even though modified atkins works for me i have a powerful carbohydrate addiction that is very difficult to control. I usually have poor success with controlling it in the long run, particularly when I am under stress. In a perfect world, maybe, but I don't live in a perfect world. Maybe you should walk thru a bakery and take a real deep breath. ;> Just looking at sugar/desserts does make people fat cause it starts the insulin response which is hormone/chemically driven (atkins talks about it). His book was a good educational tool for me and he does have his own web site and ezine...just put his name in the search engine. Good luck, in Colorado > > He also recommended the Atkins diet.
