Guest guest
Hi, One of my patients called my attention to this issue: Eating Disorders-Bulimia http://www.thefamily.com/health/bulemia.html ** What are the medical complications of bulimia? ** Repeated vomiting can expose the oral cavity and teeth to acidic gastric contents. The tooth enamel can erode and cause an increase in dental cavities. **** The esophagus and the colon can develop ulcers, ruptures, and ** strictures **. **** Bulimia is type of eating disorder excessive eating followed by dangerous forms of weight control like self-induced vomiting. Some people will actually abuse laxatives to keep the weight off. When compared to anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa is more common but sometimes harder to notice. The weight loss in a bulimic person may fluctuate, but is usually not as severe as the weight loss seen in anorexia. When people eat excessive amounts of food they may feel out-of-control. Somehow in their minds, they are gaining control by self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, use of enemas, fasting and excessive exercise. What causes bulimia? As with anorexia, there is no definite known cause of bulimia. Bulimia probably begins with depression, stress, or other feelings related to body weight or shape. The individual may be very thin, but they feel heavy or even fat which then leads to bulimic practices. RR Rutledge, M.D., F.A.C.S. Guest guest
Dr Rutledge: I appreciate your input in these matters. If you did not get enough volunteers to monitor the system please let me know what you want me to do. I am personally tired of hearing the poor-me coments from and all the negative ccomments she is bringing to the post. I think you did well to let her vent but enough is enough.
