Heyla, folks...

The following was posted in the diabetes forum where I hang out to learn

about things. It's a bit more detailed than some other information we've

had.

Also, a search on e.coli and acidophilus yields literally thousands of

reports in which our good SCD-approved acidophilus eliminated, or at least

mitigated the problems associated with getting e.coli. SO those of you who

are concerned about exposute may wish to enjoy a bit more yogurt, or pop a

few SCDophilus or Lyo-Sans.

" Our advice is that if you have fresh spinach, whether it's just spinach of

part of a mix, don't eat it. "

- Dr. Acheson, chief medical officer, FDA Center for Food Safety

and Applied Nutrition

Although it has been widely reported by the news media, it seems worth

mentioning here that the U.S. government has issued a warning against

eating any kind of fresh spinach or " fresh spinach containing-products that

are consumed raw. "

The warning comes after what are now nearly 100 reports of serious

illness (including at least 14 cases of kidney failure), apparently

associated with eating bagged fresh spinach in at least 20 states

throughout the country, including California, Connecticut, Idaho,

Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New

York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington,

Wisconsin and Wyoming. At least one death is believed likely due to the

effects of eating bagged spinach contaminated with e.coli bacteria.

The government is also advising people to contact their doctors if

they have experienced symptoms of e.coli infection after eating bagged

spinach. The initial main symptom is diarrhea, which may or may not

include bloody stools.

According to the government, Earthbound Farms Natural Selection Foods,

LLC, of San Bautista, CA, a company whose products were reportedly

consumed by some people who became ill has announced a recall of all of its

products that contain spinach in all the brands they pack with “Best if

Used by Dates” of August 17, 2006 through October 1, 2006.

Natural Selection Foods brands include: Natural Selection Foods,

Pride of San , Earthbound Farm, Bellissima, Dole, Rave Spinach,

Emeril, Sysco, O Organic, Fresh Point, River Ranch, Superior, Nature’s

Basket, Pro-Mark, Compliments, Trader Joe’s, Ready Pac, Jansal Valley,

Cheney Brothers, Coastline, D’Arrigo Brothers, Green Harvest, Mann,

Mills Family Farm, Pro*Act, Premium Fresh, Snoboy, The Farmer’s Market,

Tanimura & Antle, President’s Choice, Cross Valley, and Riverside Farms.

These products include spinach and any salad with spinach in a blend, both

retail and food service products

spinach products they've thrown away.
