Guest guest
Nikki, it could be any number of things, but if you have a choice of hospitals near you, go to one where they do gastric bypass, so hopefully, the ER people may be a little more familiar with our plumbing. But, my best suggestion would be to bite the bullet and call your surgeon. Good luck, and please let us know what happens. in NJ ******************* > Since this seems to one of the main topics recently, I myself started having extreme stomach pain and nausea yesterday, It has continued today and the pain is much worse, I do not really have a regular doctor, I have not seen my surgeon since I was one year post- op, the pain is pretty extreme this afternoon and I am contemplating going to the ER if I don't what are the possibilities?? I still have my gallbladder so I guess that is always a possibility. Any advise > would be helpful. > Thanks, > Nikki Harper > rny 5-9-00 >
Guest guest
I have been having stomach pains since December '02. Up until after my gall bladder was removed this March I thought it was gall stones -- nope. My pain is a gripping, wrenching, spasm-like pain that can radiate but mostly is centered right in the area of my pouch and to my right in the ribs area. I had this pain last Friday starting at around 2:30 am which lasted until about 4. I took 2 sublingual hyoscyamine tablets, (generic of Levsin,) when the pain returned I then took a Hydrocodone. I ended up staying awake until 6:45 am. Suffice it to say I was a dish rag by that afternoon and stayed home sick from work and slept all day. I am still tired today! The whole time I had no nausea, just excruciating pain. I also noticed that I was incredibly hot at the same time. I am sure this is not dumping, I have dumped and this is nothing like that. The only thing that seems to help is the sublingual meds, IF I take them in time. When it gets rolling I have to ride it out, which can be awful. I usually have it in two waves. The only thing that helps the pain sometimes is eating a cracker or two or drinking water. But, sometimes that doesn't help at all. You might ask your doctor about Levsin and see if he will prescribe it. I hope we all get this figured out someday. I intend to go to a new wls doc and ask him to run tests to find out. Guest guest
Jac, I remember those symptoms you lived with for years before the revision. I had a staple line disruption and had a stomach transection a year after my original RNY surgery. So, the heartburn is one thing, but if I started having reflux again, I'd be freaking. So, you're still feeling good, and Mom, too? Any new issues since the revision? Is it much different than your original surgery...I mean the types of food you can eat, etc.? in NJ ************************** In a message dated 9/14/2003 3:17:50 PM Eastern Daylight Time, jholdaway@... writes: > When I had mine out, I did not have any gallstones. Guest guest
For me, that would have been my gall bladder. It only took me 5 years to convince a doctor---ANY doctor, of that. Mine was out in July. Not a spot of pain since. Jac http://www.pictureitdigitaldesigns.com/ http://members.cox.net/XXXFARMPAINTS mail to: jholdaway@... Last nite I ate the top from 2 slices of meat pizza. As soon as I finished I started having pain in the middle of my abdomen with pain radiating to my back. Thought I was gonna have to go to the ER. Went to bed and lay there on my left side for about 10 min holding a pillow to my tummy. It just went away... Anyone with any ideas? I know what it could have been, but has anyone had this and can give me some insite? Could it have been: Gallbladder attack? Stuck food? Overfilled pouch? A strange kind of dumping? Thanks in advance for any help! Guest guest
That's exactly how my pain started, but with me, it was an egg roll. Guest guest
, Did you have to have your gb removed and how long before you had to have it out? The thing that gets me is that the pain only lasted a little while (felt like a lot longer than it was, LOL). Guess it's time to go see my doc again! Sigh..... Guest guest
Nope, I still have my dear gallbladder. When I had the ultrasound about a year ago, it showed no stones. So, the doc said to try the Nexium, and if it happens again, I'll go for a scope. The symptoms for me are similar to an ulcer, but he thinks it's gastritis. I hope he's right. Do you get heartburn at all? I did, but not since the Nexium. in NJ ********************* > , > > Did you have to have your gb removed and how long before you had to > have it out? Guest guest
When I had mine out, I did not have any gallstones. It was enlarged, and the doc said there were several large polyps on it. This was determined by ultrasound. To say I just had " heartburn " would have been a gross understatement. Guest guest
I'm feeling great! NO food issues. As a matter of fact, I can eat things now that I haven't been able to eat in over 20 years. Ice cream.spicy foods.things I need to stay away from! LOL But, that won't be so hard, since for the next year I'll just be shopping for me. Fred leaves for Afghanistan next weekend. I can live on cheese and veggies. I've never been able to give those up. And I don't like them with sauces or butter. I take my veggies straight. Guest guest
I guess it was only a matter of time. Fred will be in my prayers that he stays safe and sound over there, and comes home quickly. And, don't forget, you have an extended family here. Guest guest
Nope, no heartburn at all! Not since my WLS. I have wondered if I have IBS. But, I have wondered that for years. Didn't have the loose stools usually common with IBS until I had been stopped up for a few days, then the pain would be pretty rough with gas and all. It would be worse if I was under stress. The constipation was gone for about 18 mo after my WLS, but it returned and I have to deal with it again! The flaxseed has helped BUNCHES!!! Keeps me pretty regular now. Wouldn't think that that was the problem now. I know, more info than you wanted, LOL! Reba > > , > > > > Did you have to have your gb removed and how long before you had to > > have it out? Didn't have the loose stools usually common with IBS =============================== Reba: You can also be having a problem with what is called constipating irritable bowel syndrome. IBS can cause so many different symptoms from loose stools to constipation to atypical chest pain. Docs have been prescribing Zelnorm, 6 mg bid for symptoms of constipating IBS and patients seem to be responding nicely to it. Also Librax helps along with a high fiber, high fluid diet and maybe a proton pump inhibitor like Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, etc. Feel better. Guest guest
But 3 weeks out i have the loosest BM's every morning on the minute for the last 2 years, no pain, just happy that im not constapated(sp) because that happened once.Should i be concerned with loose bowel movements? At first i thought it was because of what i was eating- but i change my diet so often and it is still the same- it dont bother me having the very loose stools, but i was wondering should i be concerned??? ================================== Tara: If you're concerned about loose bowel movements over a long period of time, you should ask your doc. It just may be the norm for you since your surgery. My gastro docs are amazed that I don't have chronic loose stools or diarrhea. Anything can be the cause of that from the surgery, to diet, to stress. There are so many factors involved. We're such delicate little flowers now, that the least little symptom can mean nothing or a disaster. (in my case, usually a disaster). I used to get up in the morning with extreme urgency and have to kick Tim out of the bathroom because I had to go, go, go. It was around the same time every morning. This went on for awhile, but happens occasionally now. Noticed that when my low back has bothered me a lot during the night that I have this problem. Is there a correlation? I don't know. Could be from the medications I take when my back spasms or the fact that I pace the house all night awake and in pain. Right now I take Nexium, 40 mg twice a day and Librax twice a day along with Atenelol twice a day. Seems to be the right combo for me. Once in a while I will throw in a much needed ambien. Bottom line is if it concerns you, you should go have it checked by your doc. Please have it checked. Regina
Guest guest
Regina, Thanks for the info. I called my PCP and he is sending me for liver enzyme test. Says that if they are high that it is probably my gallbladder and we will need to decide where to go from there. He feels that it's a pretty good bet that it is the gb. Will know more after the test. I appreciate this list of kind and loving folks! Thanks! Reba > Nope, no heartburn at all! Not since my WLS. I have wondered if I > have IBS. But, I have wondered that for years. Guest guest
hi, im new to the group. i have chronic pancreatitis. three years ago i was in cali. with my son and the pain in my stomach was intolerable so i admitted myself to the hospital in orange county. i live outside of philly by the way and am looking for some local people or groups if anyone is from my area? so i was diagnosed with the pancreatitis and was told im diabetic. in the week after the hospital i was getting terrable stabbing and burning in my hands and esp. my feet. i was told i have numerous types of neuropothy. i went to the mayo clinic as i thought it would be a cure only to find out that the neuropothy and pancreatitis are progressive. if i drink i will die they said. i still have a beer at night a couple times a week. my dr. says its ok. i need to find a compastionate pain dr. in my area. does anyone out there know any drs. im also concerned about where ill be at in 5-10 years and my life expectancy. i cant get an answer on it. my sugars are not under control and i dont know what to do except stop eating. im only 42 and i cant do much because of the pain. i barely eat and gain weight. im really depressed. my family is not supportive and dont really want me around. well, i thought i would write a bit since i just joined. my only concern with the group is that its so big and if i dont check my mail how will i know if i get a post? thanks, fred k not proofread
Guest guest
Cayci, The pain varies, of course, but for the most part the pain was taken care of by the medicine and as long as I didn't overdo it I was fine. If I stretched too much getting up I would have the pain, but I had more pain from the IV in the hospital than from the actual surgery . I took 2 weeks off, was off of pain meds the day after I came home and spent the rest of the time getting my strength back up and learning how to eat. Guest guest
Everyone is different in their healing process. I would never recommend any less than 4 weeks off even for lap surgery. This is major surgery and even if you feel great by week 2 your body may require more time to heal and rest. You can always put in for 4 weeks but go back after 2 if you really feel you must? There is the possibility for complications that could make your healing time longer. I know it took me longer to heal after having two surgeries the same week due to complications. I know that when I undergo anasthesia my body just reacts very strongly to it and I am tired for weeks afterward. It took me months to feel " normal " after my Hysterectomy 4 years ago and it took me a good 6 weeks to feel like I didn't need a nap halfway through the day after my Bypass. As far as pain...I don't really remember to be honest so it probably wasn't so bad for me. I do remember I didn't sleep lying on my side for 2 months after surgery. I sort of propped myself up on pillows and slept semi-sitting. That's just me though. Colleen Lap-RNY 11/03/03 315/195/??? > > > Hi everyone. I am extremely new to this.
