Guest guest
Hi Fellow SCD pals, I noticed that some have been worrying about phenols and salicylates (a sub group of phenols), and thought I would share what I know. In some people phenols are said to cause an " allergy " reaction (although it is not a typical allergy reaction). This is often common in children with ASD, people with intestinal diseases, and leaky gut syndromes caused by Candida. Candida has the ability to grow out of hand in people who have had antibiotic treatment or steroid treatments. Antibiotic and steroids are known to kill the good gut flora. Without a balance the Candida and other bad gut bugs take advantage and cause disease. Some neurological and psychological. Candida alone if gone unchecked, can grow into the intestinal lining making it very permeable and allows large proteins to get through undigested. This in itself can cause havoc on the brains and behavior of some of us. Thus, causing the sensitivity that many have to gluten and casein. Sometimes even causing the exorphine/opiod reaction that is so known in many ASD children. To further complicate things, all grains, meats, fish, eggs, milk, fruit, vegetables are full of phenols. If we where to remove them we would starve. Plus, we would not want to because, phenols act as a POWERFUL antioxidant and detoxifier in our bodies. Many nutrients and active substances essential for us to have every day are phenols. Such as, Vitamin C, K, E, all the B's, and amino acids. Some neurotransmitters themselves such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and histamine are also phenols. Gallic acid is the most known in the ASD community. Some have justified cutting this one out, but not realizing the consequences. Gallic Acid is found in about 70% of all foods including food colorings. Some believe that taking this out is equivalent to starving a person. Malnourishment and a worsening of symptoms is often the result. This is why Elaine suggests that if a SCD legal food does not cause a life threatening allergic reaction, or anaphylaxis, that we should go ahead and eat it. She realized that most of these ASD kids come to the SCD solution very malnourished and sick. Realizing that in a relatively short time of practicing the SCDiet with 100% conviction, that a persons intestines would heal out of some of these strange " allergies " and sensitivities. SCD is high in foods that have this antioxidant and detoxifying power. Most who start the SCDiet are now eating fruits and vegetables in a much higher amount than ever in their life. These phenol containing foods have powerful antioxidant and detoxifying abilities. When a person with ASD or intestinal disease eats them, these phenols help to wash toxins out of their storage sites, from the tissues and fat in their bodies. These phenols help us to release toxins that then get into our blood stream and are slowly filtered out by the liver and kidneys and excreted out. During this process of elimination it is common to see symptoms. These symptoms range from headaches, GI upset, behavior abnormalities, to skin rashes and sneezing. So in fact what is happening is that these phenols in the SCDiet are trying to " clean you up " . This phenomenon is known as " die off " , " detox reaction " or Herxheimer reaction " . And it is typically seen in patients doing a detox programme. This is why the SCDiet if eaten as Elaine suggested, works so well with ASD children. Among many things, it is a detox program. The high phenolic foods that come naturally in the SCDiet (a diet rich in meats, fruits, vegetables and nut flours) and the deduction of starch and sugar create a diet that helps the body to not only stop feeding the bad gut flora, but also helps the body to let go off all those hidden toxins and even heavy metals. The elimination of starch and sugar causes the bad gut bugs to starve, since there is nothing down under to feed them. As they die their cellular structures break down and they release toxins too. At this point the organs of the body have a big job to do. Now they have to filter out and excrete all of this. During this time we can feel rather sick. This is why during " die off " some ASD children have a worsening of behavior. We can even feel like we have the flu. This is why we see strange rashes, flushing of the cheeks, a runny nose and ocd and stimming behaviors can become more prevalent. A multitude of symptoms can happen. This is why it is suggested that we take activated Charcoal capsules (one hour before meals or one hour after meals) and have long warm soaks with Epsom Salts in the tub. Epsom salts is known to pull out toxins from the skin, and activated charcoal can soak the toxins up in the digestive system. Both these solutions are given so that a person can tolerate the " die off " and allow the body to let go of these horrible things that are keeping us sick with ASD, overgrowth of Candida, and other intestinal diseases. AS the intestines " die off " it is also important to repopulate the gut with SCD allowed probiotics. Elaine suggested just taking the acidophilus and yogurt. It is a simple and easy way to do this. Many have testified that after this first die off, their ASD child emerges a different person. Some have witnessed an increase of speech or the ability to talk for the first time. The ability to control seizures, and delirium spells. Better eye contact, less sensory issues, and the ability to smile and enjoy life a bit better. Yet, Elaine warns in her BTVC book that at three months their can be another regression. These set backs can happen several times in the first year. Each time die off occurs the ASD person feels better, and better. Anyone with intestinal disease benefits. The intestines continue to heal. The body continues to detox. A process that is said to take years. Yet, no doubt a process that is well worth the time and sacrifice. I hope this helps those to understand the process of healing the SCD way a bit better and to stop fearing the phenols in the SCDdiet. For those with concern of validity, this message has been approved by the Pecan Bread owner, Mimi. Sincerely, and God Bless Antoinette and (both cd) and three kids (cd, colitis, ibs, add, adhd, autism/pdd and more) SCD 2/
Guest guest
Thank you for the wonderful definition. My son is experiencing respiratory problems today and we have been on the diet for about 10 weeks. I gave him fermented veggies with lemon juice. The veggies are supposed to be another form of probiotic(an idea I got from reading Body Ecology) since we can't have dairy yet. But he does have a sensitivty to citrus. So is this a sever allergic reaction or die off?
