Guest guest
What you've described is a " rotating helmet. " STARband's website says this should correct itself in two weeks, if you re-align the helmet in conjunction with the growth of the head. The idea should generalize to other brands: when the skull grows into the helmet a bit, the helmet should find its holding points. It's not the passage of a certain amount of time that raises the red flag, but whether they've had to remove foam to accommodate growth. If it still hits the ears after that, start squawking. If a helmet just doesn't correspond to the shape of the head, it's like trying to cut the hole out of a blanket. A good-fitting helmet might be fit so as to touch the ears, anticipating growth, but it won't be the ears that keep it in place. I had a STARband that did that as a result of the cast being removed from the head before it was sufficiently rigid. So, remain suspicious, and do not allow heat rash to progress under any circumstance. A bad orthotist might use that as an excuse to carve out the front of the helmet and leave you waiting hopelessly for the head to grow into a correct fit again. (Happened to us.) But otherwise, I'd continue the break in, and wait for the appointment if directed to do so when you call on Monday. -- Thad Launderville Montpelier, VT Clara age 19 1/2 months, 3 1/2 months in STARband On Nov 27, 2009, at 10:08 AM, oinumam wrote: > Hi. Guest guest
Sorry to be responding so many days later. How is that band fitting now? Have you had any more fitting appts? If the band is shifting so much that it is pressing on the ears then I would say you need to go back in a demand for it to be fixed. If they cannot get it to fit right, then they need to make a new band. We had 2 hangers. The 1st one was a bit big but after refitting it every few days for the 1st week it was great. Our 2nd band was poorly made - way too big and a waste of time. Not sure if it was a bad scan, a bad manufacturer, a combo or possibley the wrong band. After fighting with it for so long, we stopped. Also, you can look thru old messages to see if your location or ortho has been discussed here before. HTH! Jen Mom to Luli - 4 yrs old Torticollis, Plagio, Syringomyelia New Helmet is crooked Hi. My baby got his helmet two days ago, and we can't seem to get it to go on straight. The center line is slightly shifted to one side, so that the ear holes are not even (one side presses against the back of his ear and the other side presses against the front). Also, it does not cover all of his forehead and leaves a red mark on one side (which fades after an hour or so). I thought it was supposed to sit just above the brow? When we did the initial fitting, orthotist said it was okay that the helmet was not centered, but I'm worried that maybe the helmet does not fit him correctly. He does have pretty severe plagiocephaly (15mm) and it's a Hanger helmet. Can anyone offer their own experiences or advice? Should we continue to break the band in over the weekend or take it off and wait until Monday? Thanks.
Guest guest
Thank you all for your responses. I went in on Monday to have it looked at by the orthotist and his head had grown since the last measurements were taken for the helmet so that is why it did not fit properly. She shaved down the red spot and it is much better now, and the ears are asymmetrical (one more forward than the other due to his plagiocephaly) but she said it should start to even out as he wears the helmet. There is still some side-to-side movement but he seems a lot more comfortable. I'll continue to look at it and get it adjusted if needed... > > Sorry to be responding so many days later. > How is that band fitting now?
